VCTF SCHOOLS BOARD DIRECTORS

By Kofi Ahovi

The Venture Capital Trust Fund (VCTF) as part of its Technical Assistant (TA) has organized a 2-day training workshop for companies that have received investment approval from the fund.

The training workshop, which is the second to be organized, was centred on good corporate governance for board of directors of beneficiary companies to equip them with skills to enhance their performance.

The purpose of the training program was to expose them to national and global context of corporate governance, as well as develop critical skills that are needed for the effective functioning of leadership and the fiduciary responsibilities of board of directors.

The participants were taken through corporate ethics, responsibility and good corporate governance among others.

VCTF about a month ago organized a similar one on financial reporting and management and entrepreneurship training for beneficiary companies to deepen the understanding of sound financial management and how to effectively report on company’s finances to ensure compliance.

To ensure the success of the TA program VCTF has set aside GH¢2m for the TA program, which is aimed at ensuring the growth of Small and Medium-scale Enterprises (SMEs).

The CEO of VCTF, Osei Bonsu, believes that with adequate funding and technical support, Ghanaian SMEs will be equipped to withstand the threat of globalization and competition.

Bonsu reminded the participants that teamwork and good corporate governance was paramount to the success of any business, therefore they should endeavour to implement them.

The TA programme is in three folds; capacity building, corporate mentoring, where well organized institutions nurture upcoming ones; and specific interventions by contracting experts to work with beneficiary companies.

Venture capital or private equity is an opportunity whereby a financier unrelated to the owner provides money to start or grow existing businesses for a period of time, usually medium to long term.

A venture capital investment is usually made in exchange of ownership share rights in the business.

Since its establishment in 2004, VCTF has invested a total of GH¢9m in 20 companies. These investments were done in partnership with Activity Venture Capital Finance Company, Bedrock Venture Capital Finance Company, Gold Venture Capital Limited and Fidelity Equity Fund 11 ltd.
