The Ghana Chapter of the Network of Journalists for the Promotion of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Africa (PROMOAFRICA) is currently on an investigative tour of the Upper East and Volta regions to look into alleged human rights abuses being faced by Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).The seven member team is being led by the chapter president, Seth Kwaku Addi.
The tour is being supported by the Flex Fund, a mini grant of the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) through the Ghana Federation of the Disabled.
The team has already visited Sirigu Bolga and Chiana in the Upper East Region and is currently in the Nkwanta south in the Volta region.
According to Seth Addi, their visitation has identified some serious challenges being faced by PWDs in the stated areas.
Some of the challenges include discrimination and human rights violation. Most of them are being denied access to education and at times are used as traditional or spiritual sacrifices. Some even get killed because of their deformities.
“These abominable practices and violation of the human rights of PWDs are happening in the quiet without the knowledge of human rights activists, The Ghana Federation of the Disabled (GFD) and the government,” Addi stated.
He added that during their tour they were able to reach out to the community leaders, the victims, the general public and chiefs.
He said Ghanaians will be shocked to hear that these gross human-rights abuses are happening quietly in the country when the network finally released its findings to the Ghana Federation of the Disabled (GFD) by the end of the month.
He said, since the inception of the Network, they have been working closely with the Ghana Federation of the Disabled, PWDs and the Organisation of Persons With Disabilities (OPWDs) in Ghana in the areas of advocacy, research, publication and promotion of the rights of PWDs in Ghana.
They have also ensured that stories on disability issues in Ghana gain prominence and positive reportage in the local and international media.
