The Chairman of the Manipal Health Enterprises Pvt Ltd (MHEPL), Dr Sudarshan Dr Ballal, has said that current projections of heart diseases were a wakeup call for all and sundry to adopt a healthy lifestyle.
He said that currently heart diseases are common across all age groups including people in their 30s or 40s and said the primary reasons are stress, lack of exercise, and unhealthy food habits, apart from excessive smoking and drinking.
He cited that India was currently witnessing nearly two million heart attacks a year and majority of the victims are youngsters, which is not a healthy trend.
Compared to the West, Indian’s experience heart failures early and therefore it is recommended to modify lifestyle at an early age. Keeping cholesterol levels under check and undergoing regular health check-ups are the key to maintain a healthy lifestyle,” Dr Ballal said during a virtual international workshop on World Heart Day.
The MHEPL, organised the workshop in collaboration with the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), which was under the theme, “Guardians of the Heart” for the people across all age groups.
The event was launched on 28 September 2021 with participants from Nigeria, Cameroon, Kenya, Ghana, Malawi, Tanzania, Rwanda, Maldives, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
The objective of the workshop was to educate, inspire and motivate people to have a healthy heart and to spread awareness on the importance of heart health.
The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Roland Affail Monney, said the initiative was committed to create awareness on major lifestyle diseases that will potentially affect the common man.
Considering the rising incidences and higher morbidity of heart failure patients, there is a need for a dedicated workshop like this that provides end-to-end and comprehensive education and spreads awareness for heart diseases.”

The workshop
Organisers said it would be an ongoing digital workshop for a duration of three to six months with a motive to educate people around the importance of keeping the heart hale and hearty specially keeping in mind the current alarming situation of cardiac health among youngsters.
It will also educate people on how to have a nutritious diet and at the same time how to take care of the heart while staying at home.
The agenda of the workshop was to make people aware about different ways of keeping the heart healthy while staying at home as digital health is the need of the hour.
