GNECS, partners mark World Egg Day, with a call to eat eggs daily for a better life

 As part of the effort to create more awareness on the nutritional values of eggs on human growth and development, the Ghana National Eggs Campaign Secretariat (GNECS) in collaboration with Women in Poultry Value (WIPaC) and the Greater Accra Egg Distributors Association have embarked on a float through some principal streets of Accra.

The float forms part of the activities to mark this year’s World Egg Day celebrated under the theme, “Eggs for a Better Life”. The 4 hour float commenced at the Obra Spot at 8:00am and ended at Lapaz New Market with free distribution of cooked eggs to people from all walks of life.  

Addressing the media shortly after the float, the National Coordinator of GNECS, Madam Comfort Kyerewa Acheampong, said second Friday in the month of October is set aside on the global calendar to celebrate the consumption of egg as a good sauce of protein for humanity, adding that egg contains nutrients that are essential to human health.

According to her, GNECS and its partners in the poultry value claim have distributed close to 6,000 eggs at Amasaman and its environs, schools, churches, hospitals and stated further that the celebration was held simultaneously in all the 16 regions of the country.

We distributed over 6000 cooked eggs free to individuals in Accra alone. The other regions also did same," she noted.

Eggs, she said, can be consumed on daily bases and explained that it can be fried, boiled and goes with all kinds of dishes, adding that “health professionals and nutritionists have certified egg as a healthy protein”.

For her part, Mirabel Asombaya, Nutrition Officer at the Ghana Health Service (GHS) urging the public to eat egg daily for a good source of protein, she added that it enhances the memory of the brain, good eyesight, libido, bones, muscle, blood circulation among others.

She advised the public to make egg the number one source of protein since it is affordable and it goes with all dishes and does not contain cholesterol, adding that studies have revealed that it reduces the risk of stroke.

Madam Constance Abankwa, an egg distributor at Mallam Atta Market in an interview urged government to support poultry farmers with inputs and subsidized feed meal in order to avert the challenges that stakeholders in the poultry value chain are going through in the cause of their trade particularly distributors.

Donations

As part of the activities to mark the World Egg Day, GNECS and its partners donated crates of eggs to institutions including the Ga West Municipal Hospital and Darkuman ‘1’ Junior High School where a total of 2000 pieces of boiled eggs were distributed to patients, hospital staff, students and teaching staff.
