GPHA Staff wins Regional May Day Award

SALWA IS-HAQ ABDUL HAKI, a Senior Staff of Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Tema, has won the 2023 Regional May Day Award for her contribution to the development of the Maritime and Workers Union (MDU), the Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) and the Labour Movement in general.

 Salwa Is-Haq Abdul Haki who is a Senior Staff of GPHA in Tema is recognized as a hard-working staff of GPHA who has made tremendous contribution to the strengthening of the Women’s wing of the MDU.

The citation of the Award mentioned her contribution to women’s participation in gender mainstreaming in the Maritime industry.

The Citation of the Award mentioned among other things that , “Through your distinguished service to the Maritime and Dockworkers Union and your Local Union at the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, you have advanced the course of women empowerment and equal representation at the highest level of decision making”.

The citation paid glowing tribute to her contribution in the empowerment of maritime women by stating that, “Your singular efforts have resulted in a number of women trained and have their capacity built in Leadership Skills Development, Social Partnership and Industrial Relations”.

Salwa IS-HAQ ABDUL HAKI rose to become the female vice Chairperson of the Tema District of MDU and subsequently becoming the first female Chairperson of the Tema District Council of MDU.

She also served as the 2nd Vice Chairperson of the GPHA Junior Staff Union (JSU) for two terms from 2015 to 2022.

She provided devoted service as a member of the Women in Maritime of West and Central Africa, (WIMOWCA) and a Member of the Women’s wing of the International Transport Workers Federation ( ITF).

She has participated in many workshops on Maritime Labour and Women both locally and at the international level.

She received the 2023 May Day Award for her over fifteen (15 ) years dedicated service to the MDU in addition to her hard work as GPHA Staff .

It is for her invaluable work and contribution to the MDU and the Maritime industry that she has been honoured with the 2023 Regional May Day Award.


The Hon. Henry Quartey , Regional Minister of Greater Accra presented the award to Mrs Salwa IS-HAQ Abdul Haki.

EB-ACCION DISBURSES US$15 MILLION

By Fred SARPONG Ecobank-Accion (EB-Accion), a partnership between Ecobank Ghana Limited and Accion International has disbursed amount to the tune of $15 million to over 36,000 borrowers in Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) sector in the country, since the institution was set up barely six months ago. Amantin & Kasei Community Bank posts impressive growth, with over GH¢1m profit

 Amantin and Kasei Community Bank, at Amantin in the Bono East Region has posted impressive growth in all the performance indicators during 2022 financial year under review. The bank recorded profit after tax of GH¢1,055,662, representing 35.66% more over the 2021 figure of GH¢778.151. This achievement stemmed out of 49.24% gross income growth from GH¢8,143,526 to GH¢12,153,537. Total deposits of the bank went up by 36.20%, changing from GH¢50,959,848 in 2021 to GH¢69,405,591 in 2022. The bank increased loans and advances by 22.15% from GH¢14,128,017 to GH¢17,257,614. Total assets showed an appreciation of 29.32%, amounting to GH¢77,918,288 as against GH¢60,250,693 in the previous year. On the other hand, the bank posted a marginal increase in short term investments portfolio from GH¢24,439,761 to GH¢26,585,698, indicating 8.78% change.
