I was humbled by my nomination as BoG Governor -Dr. Asiama

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, (BoG) Dr. Johnson Asiama has revealed that he was humbled by his nomination as the new governor of the central bank.

Since joining the Bank of Ghana and moving on to become a Deputy Governor, I never knew that there will come a day that I will join these honorable men, who once served as governors of the Bank of Ghana” , he said pointing to pictures of past governors in the room.

“For me, I saw this nomination as a humbling one, putting some pressure on me to live up to expectation going forward”, he added.

Dr. Asiama said this in response to a question posed by JOYBUSINESS when he meet the two Deputy Governors of the bank on February 3, 2024 after assuming office.

He expressed his commitment to work with the current deputy governors to ensure that ongoing programmes and initiatives are sustained.

Background

President John Mahama last week announced the nomination of Dr. Asiama as the next Governor of the BoG, pending approval by the Council of State.

This was after Dr. Addison announced his terminal leave, beginning February 3, 2025, in preparation for his retirement.

Dr. Addison’s tenure will officially end on March 28, 2025, in accordance with the Bank of Ghana Act, 2002 (Act 612), as amended.

Dr. Asiama until his appointment, was the Executive Chairman of Wessex Investment and Consultancy Limited, a position that he has been holding since 2018.

Dr. Asiamah joined the Bank of Ghana in 1996, and rose through the ranks and several departments to become the Deputy Governor of the BoG.

Relationship with the current governors

Dr. Asiama also highlighted the great team at the Bank of Ghana and the ability to deliver on their mandate.

One thing that I can assure you of is that we have a good team and we should be able to take off from where Dr. Ernest Addison left off”, he stressed.

On his relationship with the Deputy Governors, Dr. Asiamah disclosed that the working relationship has been great.

“For instance, The First Deputy Governor Dr. Maxwell Opoku Afari and I entered the Bank of Ghana the same year and we never knew we will get this far. I think this is something that should motivate all of us”, he said

Dr. Asiamah said his appointment should motivate others to work hard and achieve the best.

E&P takes over Black Volta and Sankofa Gold projects after years of delay

Indigenous mining firm Engineers & Planners (E&P) has acquired Azumah Resources Ghana Ltd and Upwest Resources Ghana Ltd, taking full control of the long-stalled Black Volta and Sankofa gold concessions in the Upper West Region. The transaction, registered with the Registrar of Companies and approved by the Minerals Commission, ends nearly two decades of under-investment, legal disputes, and capital shortfalls that kept the concessions dormant. With global gold prices trading above $3,000 per ounce, the move comes at a time when Ghana is seeking fresh mining revenue to support its IMF-backed fiscal consolidation programme. E&P announced that it has secured funding to begin mine development and has committed to repaying verified debts associated with the projects.
