Government provides GHc250,000 to fight black flies

By Kofi Ahovi
The Government has made available an amount of GH¢ 250,000 to the Bui Power Authority (BPA) to begin the control of black flies threatening the smooth implementation of the Bui Hydroelectric Project. The estimated cost of the proposed intervention over the next three years is GH¢750,000.

The Bui Dam is a 400 megawatt hydro-electric project currently being built at the Bui Gorge at the southern end of Bui National Park in Ghana.

It is a $700 million, project between the government of Ghana and Sino Hydro, a Chinese construction company. In addition to increasing the domestic electricity supply, power generated from Bui is expected to be exported to Burkina Faso, Mali and Cote d'Ivoire.

The Minister for Energy, Oteng Adjei, made this know when he appeared before Parliament last week to response to question tabled by the Member of Parliament for Tain constituency, Honourable Ahmed Ibrahim on measures been instituted to control the black fly nuisance at the Bui Hydroelectric Project site.

According to Oteng-Adjei, the black fly nuisance control programme will include preliminary studies covering the survey to determine breeding sites, larviciding which entails spraying breeding sites as well as protection against bites.

Others he said includes distribution of appropriate medicine and educating communities within the catchment area of the project.

The Minister assured that his Ministry is collaborating with technical experts of the Ghana Health Service, Centre for Scientific &Industrial Research and the Noguichi Memorial Institute to deal with the menace.

Meanwhile in response to another question on strategies been adopted to sustain normal levels of hydroelectric power in 2010 and 2012 from the Akosombo and Kpong stations, when the Black Volta is dammed up to build the bui reservoir, the minister noted that two thermal plants are being constructed in addition to the 180 MW Sunon-Asogli thermal plant and will be commissioned by the end of 2011 and 2012 to make up for that shortfall in energy requirements of the country.
