Speaking to journalists after markets in their respective municipalities were disinfected, the Ga East Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Janet Tulasi Mensah, cautioned the general public especially market women and transport operators to continue to observe the preventive protocols to avoid getting infected and onward spread of the virus.

They must always continue to wash their hands and sanitize same as well as wear face mask to protect themselves and others too” she advised.

The disinfection exercise will amount to nothing without the adherence to the preventive protocols” she added.

In responding to a question on people who have been infected in her municipality, she urged journalists to speak to officials of the Covid-19 team for official and credible information. She explained that, politicians and people with special interest are likely to misinform the public for their own interest thereby creating fear and panic.

On his part, Joseph Odai Boye the Presiding Member for Adenta Municipal Assembly, advised market women to respect directives of the Assembly for their own good. Adding that chemicals used in exercises such as this could be harmful when breathed in.

Boye made the call after some traders defied the closure notice of the Assembly and opened their shops thereby impeding the exercise. The team from Zoomlion had to wait for them to close their stalls and shops before the exercise could continue.

We always encourage people particularly market women to obey our directives. Some of these chemical could be harmful to their health and also to ensure a smooth exercise, we called for the closure of the markets but some of them are here this morning to trade,” he lamented.

Meanwhile some of the traders said they were unaware of a market closure notice since they lived far away from the municipality and only come to trade on certain days.

Boye further advised against stigmatization of person who have recovered from the virus adding that, there is nothing shameful about contracting coronavirus but rather people should be treated with love since the virus is no respecter of persons.

The second phase of disinfection of all markets across the country by the Ministry of local Government and Rural Development in partnership with Zoomlion Ghana Limited is in line with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) standards of disinfection, which basically requires that a second disinfection should be done three months after the first exercise for maximum results.
