Parliament deadlock could affect public sector salaries – Nyarko Osei Warns

The Akim Swedru MP, Kennedy Nyarko Osei, has warned that public sector workers, including security personnel, may face salary delays if the current deadlock in Parliament persists.

The lawmaker’s warning comes after Speaker Alban Bagbin adjourned Parliament indefinitely for the second time earlier today.

According to the Speaker, the rationale behind his decision was that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs refused to show up in the chamber after requesting the Speaker to recall Parliament.

Nonetheless, Nyarko Osei in his social media post on Thursday expressed concern over the posture from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus, which he claims may prevent the necessary consensus.

From the look of things and the posturing taken by the NDC caucus in Parliament, I am afraid this appropriation will suffer a consensus approval,” he wrote in his Facebook post on Thursday.

Osei further noted that without parliamentary consensus, essential workers, including those in security services, may be unpaid in the coming months—a worrying possibility as the festive season approaches.

If you are a public sector worker and you were expecting to get your salaries to spend this Christmas, take note that the NDC caucus in Parliament has taken a decision to frustrate and prevent the Government from submitting the three months’ salary appropriations,” he added.

The MP criticised what he described as “partisanship posturing” in Parliament, lamenting its impact on governance and the country’s financial stability.

He also suggested that the current situation might have been avoided if the speakership had not been granted to an opposition member, alluding to what he described as “a hard lesson” for the ruling party.

But I don’t blame the NDC for the happenings in parliament. We have caused this ourselves by giving the speakership position on a silver platter to an opposition member. Hard lessons must be learned from these unfortunate events,” he stated.

The transaction, registered with the Registrar of Companies and approved by the Minerals Commission, ends nearly two decades of under-investment, legal disputes, and capital shortfalls that kept the concessions dormant. With global gold prices trading above $3,000 per ounce, the move comes at a time when Ghana is seeking fresh mining revenue to support its IMF-backed fiscal consolidation programme.
