Accra by Night: A New Era in Ghana's Tourism Industry

 


The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Ablah Dzifa Gomashie, has launched the "Accra by Night" initiative, a project aimed at promoting local tourism and supporting President John Dramani Mahama's 24-hour economy vision.

This initiative, led by the Ghana Tourism Authority and Ghana Tourism Development Company Limited, showcases Ghana's rich cultural heritage, vibrant nightlife, and historical landmarks in a safe and organized way.

Promoting Local Tourism and Creative Economy
the minister emphasized that the "Accra by Night" initiative promotes local tourism and supports the 24-hour economy vision by highlighting Ghana's creative economy, creating opportunities for artistes and entertainers. It showcases Accra's unique energy, culture, and creativity, transforming the city into a magical experience at night. The initiative goes beyond a typical tour, opening new opportunities for visitors, artists, and service providers.

Exploring Accra's Nightlife
The tour, which took place on a double-decker bus, showcased Accra's principal streets, historical landmarks, and nightlife hotspots. Patrons enjoyed local cuisine, including kenkey, waakye, and banku and fried pork, while dancing the night away at the Republic Bar on Oxford Street. The tour visited iconic spots such as the Lighthouse at Jamestown, Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, and Osu Night Market, among others.

Importance of Night Economy
Professor Kobby Mensah, CEO of the Ghana Tourism Development Company, emphasized the importance of tapping into the night economy to expand the country's economy.

The night economy from a tourism perspective has been demonized for so long. We need to break down those boundaries and make sure that we plug into the night economy for the betterment of this country."

A Night to Remember
The tour began at 9 pm and ended around 2:30 am, leaving participants with an unforgettable experience. Professor Mensah hinted at the possibility of expanding the concept to other cities, including Kumasi, Takoradi, and Cape Coast.

The launch of "Accra by Night" comes as tourists and locals alike seek more exciting and unique experiences. Professor Mensah noted that many people have already registered for the tour, expressing confidence that it will offer something new and thrilling.
