MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett Pledges Strong Backing For Ghana Football In $2m Sponsorship

MTN Ghana has signed a landmark sponsorship agreement with the Ghana Football Association (GFA). The $2million sponsorship package reaffirms MTN Ghana’s long-standing commitment to the growth and development of Ghanaian football.

The agreement, signed at MTN House in Accra, makes MTN Ghana the headline sponsor of all four national football teams — the Black Stars, Black Queens, Black Satellites, and Black Starlets — from September 1, 2025, to August 31, 2027.

MTN Ghana Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Blewett, said the partnership reflects the company’s belief in Ghana’s football talent and the unifying power of the sport.

Football here is not just a game, it is part of the nation’s soul. This renewed partnership is a clear statement of intent to support our national teams, promote gender inclusion, and help build a sustainable future for sports in Ghana. Every Ghanaian player, whether in the senior or junior team, male or female, deserves the opportunity to shine,” he stated.

An excited GFA President, Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, praised MTN’s enduring support for Ghanaian football, recalling the brand’s role as headline sponsor of the MTN FA Cup since the 2010–2011 season.

MTN, against all odds, believed in the FA’s leadership and invested in the future of our youth. Through the FA Cup, players from all divisions have been discovered and gone on to represent Ghana. This $2 million investment will ensure our teams are well-prepared to compete not only in Africa but on the world stage,” he said.

Chief Director at the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, Wilhemina Asamoah, described the sponsorship as “very significant” and a model for corporate Ghana.

The performance of our national teams will reflect the quality of their preparation, and this partnership relieves a huge burden on the Ministry. The sports industry is worth $800 billion globally, and we must position ourselves to invest in world-class sports for sustainable national growth. MTN’s commitment is commendable and worthy of emulation,” she said.

MTN’s relationship with Ghanaian football spans over a decade, including sponsorship of the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations hosted in Ghana, support for the Black Stars’ 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign in Qatar, and numerous grassroots football initiatives.

The signing ceremony was attended by John Paintsil, Assistant Coach of the Black Stars; former Black Stars goalkeeper Fatau Dauda; Black Queens captain Jennifer Cudjoe; and other distinguished figures from the sports industry.

The ceremony was also attended by Executives of the GFA, MTN Executives as well as Technical advisors of the GFA.

The transaction, registered with the Registrar of Companies and approved by the Minerals Commission, ends nearly two decades of under-investment, legal disputes, and capital shortfalls that kept the concessions dormant. With global gold prices trading above $3,000 per ounce, the move comes at a time when Ghana is seeking fresh mining revenue to support its IMF-backed fiscal consolidation programme. E&P announced that it has secured funding to begin mine development and has committed to repaying verified debts associated with the projects.
