The people of southern Volta are currently pushing for the passage of a legislative instrument that will pave way for the full implementation of the fishing Act.
Speaking to the Parliamentary Committee on food and agriculture at a meeting held in Accra, the group said this will prevent vessels from fishing along the coast.
In a survey conducted by the Youth Research Network of Ghana (YORNG), it was realized that activities of foreign travelers and other local vessels that fish close to the continental shelf were destroying the breeding places of fish stocks.
The survey also found that majority of the fishing public of the locality though aware of existing fishing laws, do not adhere to them due to non-enforcement by both regional and district authorities.
The group therefore called for the enforcement of the fishing laws to address the situation.
The also called on the local people to improve on the sanitation of the water bodies as well as of the appropriate fishing methods.
