I’ll build upon the strong foundation of my predecessor- Ag. Ghana Maritime Authority boss

The Acting Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Captain Dr. Kamal-deen Ali has pledged to build upon the strong foundation established by his predecessor.

Captain Ali expressed his commitment to advancing the Authority’s objectives and ensuring continued growth in the maritime sector.

Speaking during a brief handover ceremony in Accra, Captain Dr. Ali commended the immediate past Director-General, Thomas Alonsi for his six years of leadership and the significant achievements made during his tenure.

Captain Ali emphasised his readiness to work with the GMA team to further revamp the maritime industry.

It is an honor to be appointed by His Excellency President Mahama to lead this institution. I intend to continue the important work begun by Alonsi, working together with the team here to further enhance our maritime industry,” Captain Dr. Ali said.

In his parting address, Thomas Alonsi reflected on the Authority’s progress during his tenure, noting significant advancements made in addressing maritime security challenges.

To strengthen our maritime security, the VAT-MIS system is being upgraded, and most of the necessary equipment has arrived, with only a few items still pending. The Technical Director and Deputy Director-General will soon take you (Captain Dr. Ali) on a tour of the facilities where these resources are being stored, pending installation. Land sites have already been secured in the Central Region for the installation of phase one of this equipment,” Alonsi explained.

Captain Dr. Kamal-deen Ali brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as a Naval Captain, a prominent maritime lawyer, and a leading figure in maritime policy and governance at both national and international levels.

Prior to his appointment, Captain Dr. Ali served as the Executive Director of the Centre of Maritime Law and Security Africa (CEMLAWS Africa), where he provided crucial policy advice and reform services across several African countries.

He is globally recognised for his expertise in maritime law, governance, and security, having been listed among the top 50 personalities influencing Africa’s Blue Economy.
