Young entrepreneurs encouraged to capitalise on 5-year tax exemption Incentives

 A Senior Manager of Tax and Regulatory at Deloitte Ghana, Gilbert Yirenkyi Addo, has shed light on a pivotal opportunity for young entrepreneurs under 35 to drive their businesses forward through the Young Entrepreneurship Tax Incentive.

Speaking during the inaugural session of the Joy Business Advisory Series, he detailed how individuals engaged in key sectors such as manufacturing, Information, Communication and Technology (ICT), agro-processing, tourism, horticulture, and medical plants can benefit from a five-year tax exemption.

This incentive is part of a broader government effort to stimulate entrepreneurship, particularly in underserved regions such as the northern parts of Ghana.

Addo emphasised that businesses operating in these areas have an opportunity to capitalise on the tax exemptions, thereby fostering economic activity and creating employment.

Eligible young entrepreneurs must be actively involved in business streams identified under the incentive program,” he explained.

These sectors include energy production, creative arts, and agro-processing, among others. To access the exemption, entrepreneurs must notify the revenue authority and provide appropriate documentation confirming their eligibility.

Beyond benefiting from these incentives, Addo underscored the importance of maintaining compliance with tax regulations.

“The best form of tax planning is compliance,” he stated, highlighting three critical pillars for entrepreneurs: reporting, filing, and payment.

He warned that failing to adhere to these requirements could result in cumulative penalties and interest, which could burden growing businesses.

Addo further advised entrepreneurs to establish robust accounting and reporting systems to ensure smooth operations and compliance. He emphasized that such systems are not merely about avoiding penalties but also about fostering transparency and building investor confidence.

The discussion also touched on the challenges faced by small and medium enterprises (SMEs), particularly in remote regions. These businesses often lack access to resources and knowledge about government incentives.

Addo called for increased awareness campaigns to educate young entrepreneurs about the opportunities available to them and the steps required to access them.

The Young Entrepreneurship Tax Incentive is expected to transform the empowerment of young business owners across Ghana. By reducing operational costs and creating a favourable environment for growth, the initiative aims to position Ghanaian entrepreneurs as key drivers of economic development, especially in underserved regions.

For young entrepreneurs looking to take advantage of this initiative, Mr. Addo advised, “Plan effectively, stay compliant, and ensure that your business practices align with the regulatory framework. These are essential steps to not only benefit from the incentives but also to build a sustainable enterprise.”

With its potential to unlock growth and innovation, the tax incentive program offers aspiring entrepreneurs a lifeline, encouraging them to contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s economic landscape.
