Bonomanso Waterfalls: An emerging ecotourism adventure in Bono East Region

Nestled within the enchanting Bono East Region, the Bonomanso Waterfalls is emerging as a captivating destination for ecotourism enthusiasts. While the Kintampo Waterfalls remains the crown jewel of the area, drawing visitors from across Ghana, Bonomanso is carving out its niche as a vibrant recreational site.

The seven-meter cascade, located just 100 meters off the bustling Techiman-Kintampo highway in the Nkoranza North District, offers a stunning spectacle. This breathtaking waterfall tumbles from massive rocks into a serene plunge pool, which, until recently, remained a sacred site rather than a tourist attraction. The pool, encircled by dense foliage, has been transformed by a local youth group known as Quest Crew.

Recognizing the potential for ecotourism, Quest Crew has spearheaded an initiative to clear the surrounding bush and desilt the pool, which reaches depths of up to four meters. This grassroots effort reflects the community's commitment to sustainable tourism and environmental preservation. With the support of the Traditional Council and the District Assembly, Quest Crew has elevated the site, making it accessible and enjoyable for visitors.

The transformation includes the establishment of four summer huts, wash and changing rooms, and the planting of cashew trees to enhance the site’s beauty and provide shade. Isaac Owusu, spokesperson for Quest Crew, in an interview said, “We organize pool parties during public holidays and festive occasions, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive since we began this venture about five years ago.” This grassroots initiative has garnered immense local support, projecting Bonomanso as an alluring destination for relaxation and recreation.

As the popularity of the Bonomanso Waterfalls surges, private investors have begun to take notice. Construction of guest houses and hotels in the community is already underway, signaling a promising future for the area. The Bonomanso community is eager to collaborate with these investors to enhance recreational facilities, aspiring to position the site as a premier tourism destination in both the Bono East Region and Ghana as a whole.

One pressing need for the site’s managers is to erect fences to secure the area, allowing for organized events without intrusion and ensuring the safety of visitors. This proactive strategy underscores the community's commitment to advancing a well-regulated and sustainable tourism environment.

Bonomanso, Waterfalls

Bonomanso Waterfalls is not just a scenic haven; it represents a burgeoning opportunity for economic growth in the region. As the site develops, it promises to attract both local and international visitors, enriching the community economically while preserving its natural beauty. The commitment of Quest Crew and the local community lays a strong foundation for Bonomanso, transforming it into a must-visit destination in Ghana's vibrant ecotourism landscape.

The Bonomanso Waterfalls epitomizes the potential of grassroots initiatives in boosting local tourism. As it blossoms into a premier destination, it paves the way for sustainable ecotourism, creating a harmonious relationship between nature and community development. The future of Bonomanso is bright, and the world is invited to witness its transformation.
