Newmont Ahafo Foundation invests over GH¢66 million in Ahafo Region infrastructure

The Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF), recognized as the corporate social responsibility arm of Newmont Ahafo Mine, has made a substantial investment totalling GH¢66,045,955 in various infrastructure projects across ten communities in the Ahafo Region from 2009 to 2024.

The Foundation's projects aim to elevate the quality of life for residents by enhancing access to essential services in critical sectors, including health, education, water, and sanitation. The communities benefiting from this initiative are Kenyasi No. 1, Kenyasi No. 2, Ntotroso, Gyedu, Wamahinso, Yamfo, Susuanso, Afrisipakrom, Terchire, and Adrobaa.

Infrastructural development is a core focus for NADeF, with approximately 25 percent of its funding earmarked for these impactful projects. This commitment reflects NADeF's mission to empower local communities through grants, knowledge sharing, partnerships, and capacity building, all aimed at achieving sustainable development.

This information was highlighted during a recent inspection of eight ongoing infrastructure projects across four communities—Kenyasi No. 2, Ntotroso, Gyedu, and Wamahinso—conducted by members of NADeF's Board of Trustees. These projects, valued at GH¢27.3 million, encompass a range of areas including education, health, road networks, and social amenities, and are at varying stages of completion.

At Ntotroso, the inspection team evaluated a three-storey boys’ hostel block at the College of Nursing and Midwifery, which is nearing completion at 90 percent. The facility is expected to be handed over in the next six months. At Gyedu, the construction of a three-storey classroom block for the Gyedu Technical Institute is approximately 70 percent complete, signifying a tangible investment in educational infrastructure.

During their visit to Wamahinso, the team assessed a health centre project, which includes children’s wards, delivery rooms, male and female wards, an outpatient department (OPD), and storerooms. This facility is 99 percent complete and anticipated to begin operations in four months, all things being equal. Furthermore, the team inspected the University of Energy and Natural Resources satellite campus at Kenyasi No. 2, where road upgrades, landscaping, and the installation of lifts and audio-visual equipment are currently underway, alongside the construction of a four-unit pavilion lecture block that is progressing steadily.

Professor Yaw Ofosu-Kusi, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of NADeF, praised the contractors for their exceptional workmanship throughout the ten host communities. He remarked, “The quality of work being executed by the contractors is a clear demonstration of the essential role the Sustainable Development Committees (SDCs) play in their oversight duties to ensure value for money.”

E&P takes over Black Volta and Sankofa Gold projects after years of delay

Indigenous mining firm Engineers & Planners (E&P) has acquired Azumah Resources Ghana Ltd and Upwest Resources Ghana Ltd, taking full control of the long-stalled Black Volta and Sankofa gold concessions in the Upper West Region. The transaction, registered with the Registrar of Companies and approved by the Minerals Commission, ends nearly two decades of under-investment, legal disputes, and capital shortfalls that kept the concessions dormant. With global gold prices trading above $3,000 per ounce, the move comes at a time when Ghana is seeking fresh mining revenue to support its IMF-backed fiscal consolidation programme. E&P announced that it has secured funding to begin mine development and has committed to repaying verified debts associated with the projects.
