MTN Heroes of Change: Dr. Angela Dwamena's 25-Year Quest to Empower Victims of Abuse


 Dr. Angela Dwamena, a lawyer and founder of The Ark Foundation, has dedicated her life to supporting women and children who have experienced abuse. For 25 years, her organization has provided a safe haven, empowerment, and advocacy for victims of domestic violence, rape, and sexual assault.

Dr. Dwamena's journey began with a personal realization. "I grew up sensing that something was wrong with how men and women interacted," she explained. "I noticed discrimination against women in various ways, even in my own home. This realization motivated me to pursue a career focused on helping abused women and children."

The Ark Foundation offers a comprehensive approach to supporting victims of abuse, providing direct support, advocacy, and community sensitization programs. Dr. Dwamena initiated a crisis center where victims can find refuge, offering counseling services, legal support, and medical assistance.

Over the past 25 years, The Ark Foundation has achieved remarkable success, providing permanent and temporary shelter to over 500 women and children, educational support to 1,000 children, and various services to 5,000 women and children.

Despite facing challenges, Dr. Dwamena remains committed to her mission. "It's not glamorous, but it's fulfilling," she said. "I can witness the impact of my work and what God can accomplish through me."

Annabelle Pwalia, who nominated Dr. Dwamena for recognition by the MTN Heroes of Change initiative, praised her dedication and passion. "She deserves to be rewarded for her vital role in supporting victims of abuse," Pwalia said.

One beneficiary of The Ark Foundation, Matilda Gavi, in sharing her story of transformation, noted that "I wasn't feeling well; I was going through a lot," Gavi said. "Dr. Angela from The Ark Foundation intervened in my situation. I stayed with them, and they helped me through my pregnancy and later supported me in continuing my education."

The MTN Ghana Foundation's Heroes of Change initiative, which is currently in its 7th edition, recognizes and celebrates individuals like Dr. Dwamena who are making extraordinary contributions to their communities. By highlighting their stories and achievements, the initiative aims to inspire others to take action and effect positive change.
