Two fire officers injured as tanker explodes a second time at Potsin Junction

Two personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have sustained various degrees of injury following a secondary explosion during a firefighting operation at Potsin Junction in the Central Region.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, 17th March 2026, as emergency teams struggled to contain a volatile tanker fire on the Kasoa-Winneba Road.

The second blast has heightened safety concerns, with the area remaining cordoned off to prevent further casualties.

The initial emergency began at approximately 5:30 a.m., but the situation turned critical when the tanker, which appeared to be under control, suddenly reignited.

Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene as a spark from the vessel triggered a massive fireball within seconds.

“There was a spark from the tanker… within a second, all of us nearly died,” one survivor recounted, describing the sheer speed and force of the secondary detonation.

The injured fire officers were caught in the direct path of the second blast while actively working to suppress the flames. According to reports from the scene, the impact was severe enough to throw one officer from the fire tender.

Two officers have been confirmed injured and were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

One officer was reportedly standing atop the fire tender when the explosion occurred, causing him to fall to the ground.

As of the time of filing this report, no fatalities have been officially recorded.

The explosion has sent shockwaves through the Potsin Junction community, with several residents reportedly shaken and unaccounted for in the immediate chaos following the blast.

As I speak to you now, the tanker is burning again,” Adom News Central Regional Correspondent Kofi Adjei said on the JoyNews Desk.

The latest development highlights the extreme difficulty fire crews are facing as the fuel-laden vehicle continues to reignite, posing a persistent threat of further explosions.

The full extent of the property damage and the number of residents affected by the smoke and heat is yet to be fully assessed. The GNFS has dispatched additional reinforcements from neighbouring stations to bolster the containment efforts and ensure the tanker is completely cooled to prevent a third eruption.

Motorists using the Kasoa-Winneba stretch are advised to exercise extreme caution or seek alternative routes as emergency teams maintain a heavy presence at the scene.
