UK’s Trade Commissioner for Africa visits Ghana to advance modern partnership

The Trade Commissioner for Africa, John Humphrey, arrived in Ghana on Monday, September 22, for a three-day visit aimed at deepening UK-Ghana trade and investment partnerships across key sectors.

This high-level visit comes at a strategically opportune moment, aligning with Ghana’s renewed focus on economic transformation.

With the recent launch of the BIG PUSH initiative and ongoing efforts under the 24-Hour Economy Programme, HMTC’s presence offers a timely opportunity to engage with the new government and reinforce the UK’s commitment to building innovative, sustainable, and mutually beneficial business partnerships.

 HMTC’s key engagements will include:

  • A site visit to AngloGold Ashanti in Obuasi, part of the UK-Ghana Mining Trade Mission, to grow mining sector partnerships.
  • Meeting with delegates of the recent UK-Ghana Healthcare Roadshow to progress commercial deals initiated during the roadshow.
  • Participation in the Developing Markets Associates (DMA) UK-Ghana Trade and Investment Mission, supporting UK companies exploring opportunities in Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy initiative.

Over 20 UK companies are participating in the DMA UK-Ghana Trade and Investment Mission and the UK-Ghana Mining Trade Mission, including firms such as Health Consultants International, Gapuma Group, PowerX Equipment, GE HealthCare, Aqua Africa, QGMI, HED International, and Mine Tech Services.

These missions are focusing on strategic sectors, including mining, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, and technology, offering UK businesses the opportunity to engage directly with senior public and private sector stakeholders and explore commercial partnerships aligned with Ghana’s priorities.

Ahead of the visit, the Trade Commissioner for Africa, John Humphrey, said, “I am delighted to be visiting Ghana again at such an important time. The UK is committed to supporting Ghana’s development ambitions, including its 24-hour economy agenda, through strong commercial partnerships.

"I look forward to deepening our collaboration across key sectors and unlocking new opportunities for UK and Ghanaian businesses.”

British High Commissioner, Dr Christian Rogg, said, “I am pleased to welcome His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner to Ghana. This visit reflects the UK’s enduring relationship with Ghana, rooted in shared values and a commitment to mutual prosperity.

"In response to President Mahama’s call for deeper UK investment, we’re pleased that over 20 UK companies are coming to Ghana as part of the two trade missions, exploring opportunities to grow and partner, and leverage Ghana’s strategic position within the AfCFTA.”

By facilitating direct engagement between UK businesses and Ghanaian stakeholders, the visit is helping translate partnership into practical outcomes that benefit both economies.

E&P takes over Black Volta and Sankofa Gold projects after years of delay

Indigenous mining firm Engineers & Planners (E&P) has acquired Azumah Resources Ghana Ltd and Upwest Resources Ghana Ltd, taking full control of the long-stalled Black Volta and Sankofa gold concessions in the Upper West Region. The transaction, registered with the Registrar of Companies and approved by the Minerals Commission, ends nearly two decades of under-investment, legal disputes, and capital shortfalls that kept the concessions dormant. With global gold prices trading above $3,000 per ounce, the move comes at a time when Ghana is seeking fresh mining revenue to support its IMF-backed fiscal consolidation programme. E&P announced that it has secured funding to begin mine development and has committed to repaying verified debts associated with the projects.
