A Hero of Change: Emma Sallah's Anlo Special School Empowers Children with Special Needs

In the town of Keta, Emma Sallah has established the Anglo Special School, a haven for children with intellectual disabilities, including those with autism and Down syndrome. Since its launch in October 2018, the school has provided a safe and nurturing environment for these children to learn and grow.

Emma's dedication to inclusive education has earned him a nomination for the prestigious MTN Heroes of Change award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to creating positive change in his community.

Emma's journey began in 2012, when she started fundraising for inclusion and creating awareness about intellectual disabilities. After noticing the lack of educational opportunities for children with disabilities in Keta, Emma was motivated to establish the Anglo Special School.

I believe we come into this world to improve it, and that belief motivated me to undertake this journey," Emma said.

A Holistic Approach
The Anglo Special School operates as a day center, providing snacks and lunch for free to its students. Emma's team also organizes workshops for teachers from mainstream schools, conducts health screenings, and facilitates donations. They work to raise awareness within the broader disability community in Keta and Anloga.

Funding and Sustainability
The project was initially funded by Emma's organic seafood business, and she has also started a new project focused on creating art pieces from seashells to generate revenue. Despite facing challenges, Emma remains committed to her mission.

Impact and Recognition
The Anglo Special School has made a significant impact on the community, with students showing remarkable progress. The school has received recognition, including being featured in a thesis on disabilities.

I feel fulfilled knowing that my contributions are helping to improve people's lives," Emma said.

Community Praise
The community has spoken positively about Emma's work, with the chief of Anglo granting her land to build school facilities. Beneficiaries of the school have testified to the positive changes brought about by Emma's intervention.

Emma has truly done a wonderful thing for us," Akpene Adzikah said.
