Govt to review Ghana Automotive Development Policy

Government has announced plans to review the Ghana Automotive Development Policy, with a focus on incorporating an electric vehicle (EV) policy framework.

According to the Minister for Trade, Industry, and Agribusiness, Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare, the move is aimed at positioning Ghana as a competitive destination for investment in the growing EV sector.

She made the remarks at the sidelines of the official opening of the new Foton Truck showroom in Tema.

The automotive industry is ready for investment. Also to show the E-Vehicle investment is also ready. We are creating enabling environment for businesses in the automotive industry to thrive and we are doing this by reviewing the automotive policy that we have in Ghana.

When we did it 5 years ago, E-Vehicles were not that popular so we are amending the law to include E-Vehicles and E- Bicycles or E- tricycles. We are doing this to ensure that subsidies, tax waivers are also available for E-tricycles or E-motors.

“I am sure very soon you will see us with our stakeholder consultation relative to the 24-hour economy. All these industries are poised to producing 24 hours. We are in a hurry to do component manufacturing law as well as amending the existing law to incorporate E-vehicles and E-motors in a proper way,” Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare said

The Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry , Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare also toured several automotive assembly facilities in the Tema enclave, including the Japan Motors Assembly Plant and Volkswagen Ghana.
