Inspiring Change Through Beekeeping: Gideon Zege's Journey to MTN Heroes of Change

Gideon Hopeson Zege, a 40-year-old beekeeper from Afram Plains, has been nominated for the prestigious MTN Heroes of Change award. His remarkable story is a testament to the power of resilience and determination.

Zege, has made a significant impact in his community through his project, Bees for Development (BfD). His journey, marked by perseverance and dedication, has transformed the lives of over 2,000 local beekeepers and their families.

From Hardship to Opportunity

Gideon's motivation for starting his project stemmed from his own experiences of hardship and exploitation. As an orphan who was trafficked and forced to work as a child, he understands the struggles faced by many in his community. His encounter with a man who introduced him to retailing honey sparked his interest in beekeeping, which eventually became his profession.

Empowering Local Beekeepers

Gideon's project aims to empower local beekeepers by providing them with training and resources to practice sustainable beekeeping. He has trained over 2,000 beekeepers, with over 1,200 active beekeepers across the Afram Plains. His initiative has not only improved the livelihoods of these individuals but also contributed to the preservation of the environment.

Impact on the Community

The impact of Gideon's project is evident in the lives of the people he has helped. Many families have been able to replace their mud houses with brick homes, acquire tricycles for transportation, and enroll their children in tertiary institutions. The forestry commission has also reported a reduction in bush fires and illegal invasions.

Challenges and Future Plans

Despite the challenges he has faced, including inaccessible roads, environmental destructors, and financing issues, Gideon remains committed to his project. He plans to extend his initiative to the northern regions of Ghana, making beekeeping a national agenda and promoting it as a viable option for employment and environmental sustainability.

Recognition and Awards

Gideon's work has not gone unnoticed. He has been nominated for the MTN Heroes of Change program, with many community members and leaders praising his dedication and impact.

Community Leader's Testimonial

Some weeks ago, winners of the best male and female bee keepers were his trainees. They were very 'poor' subsistent farmers who in some time past could not fend for their families. Today, they earn tens of thousands of cedis for keeping bees. For this, I recommend him for any awards program. He is changing lives and protecting the environment." - Awudu Yakubu Omoro Modoc, Executive Director, Afram Plains Development Organization

Hawa Ibrahim, beekeeper and a beneficiary of Zege’s project observed that "He is god-sent. He is a selfless and patient person. Getting to this part of Afram Plains was not easy for him to come but he persevered with us."

I have moved from subsistent farmer to a fully-fledged beekeeper with over 200 bee hives. All my children are not idling about with me here in this village. All six are in school, learning a trade in Kpando, all thanks to my earnings from bee keeping," Ibrahim added, beekeeper

Abdul Shafik Asminu, beekeeper and also a beneficiary of Zege’s project "Bee keeping is the future and thank Mr. Zege for introducing me to it." -
