MTN Ghana, DOVVSU Launches Campaign to End Digital Violence against Women and Children

MTN Ghana, in collaboration with the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, has launched a 16-day campaign to raise awareness about digital violence against women and children. The campaign, themed "Unite to End Digital Violence against Women and Children," aims to educate the public about the dangers of online violence and promote a safe digital environment. Speaking at the launch event at the Police Depot Cluster of School in Accra, Adwoa Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Ghana, emphasized the importance of addressing digital violence, particularly against women and children. We are here today to launch 16 days of gender activism, and we are partnering with DOVVSU to create awareness around digital violence," she said. Wiafe noted that digital violence is a growing concern, with many women and children falling victim to online harassment and cyberbullying. "We know about gender-based violenc...

Wife Beating: A Disturbing 32% of Ghanaian Girls Say It's Justifiable

About 32 per cent of girls in the country between 15 years to 24 years believe that ‘wife beating’ is justifiable, Joycelyn Adii, the Bono Regional Director of the Department of Gender, said. She said a domestic violence survey conducted in 2016 revealed that 27.7% of Ghanaian women have suffered at least one form of violence. Adii called for stakeholder support to end outmoded traditional practices, inimical to the holistic growth and development of women and girls. She said harmful traditional norms remained a key barrier to the progressive growth and development of women and girls in the country. Adii made the call when speaking at a forum to mark the 2025 celebration of the “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence” campaign, held at Abesim, near Sunyani. Every year in November, the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) launches and spearheads the campaign to raise awareness and promote action to eliminate violence against women and girls in the...

Check out GACL’s proposed infrastructure projects to position KIA for 24-hour economy

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) is pushing forward a new wave of aviation-focused infrastructure and commercial projects to reposition Kotoka International Airport (KIA) as a fully integrated hub for Ghana’s emerging 24-hour economy. Ghana travel guide This forms part of the broader Ghana Reset Agenda, with GACL aligning airport operations, revenue streams and commercial developments to support round-the-clock activity, job creation and enhanced passenger experience. Currently, GACL runs two major revenue streams – aeronautical and non-aeronautical. While aeronautical earnings such as the Airport Passenger Service Charge (APSC), aircraft landing and parking fees and navigation charges are critical, they are highly regulated and offer limited room for growth. To support 24-hour operations, the company is aggressively scaling up non-aeronautical revenues including car park operations, commercial royalties, land subleases and rental income. These earnings have become import...

Ghana’s current account hits US$3.8bn, accounting for cedi stability

Ghana’s current account improved significantly in the first nine months of 2025, reaching a surplus of US$3.8 billion. This is compared to US$553.6 million for the same period in 2024. According to the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of Ghana, the trade surplus increased to US$7.5 billion. This is on the back of a surge in gold and cocoa export earnings. Private inward transfers remained high at U$6.0 billion at the end of the third quarter. According to the Bank of Ghana, the current account surplus, together with favourable balances in the capital and financial accounts, translated into an overall balance of payment surplus of US$1.8 billion and supported an accumulation of reserve assets to US$11.4 billion in October 2025. This is equivalent to 4.8 months of import cover. Reserves are also projected to increase further by the year-end. The Central Bank said the reserve accumulation efforts have helped provide a cushion for the currency, with the cedi strengthening agains...

GoldBod records over US$5.4bn in gold aggregation and exports in 3rd quarter of 2025

The Ghana GoldBod has reported significant progress in its operations for the third quarter of 2025, with notable achievements across gold aggregation, export performance, reserve accumulation, and licensing compliance in the country's mining sector. In its latest statutory quarterly report, the GoldBod disclosed that a total of 26,153.98 kilogrammes of gold, valued at approximately US$2.76 billion, was aggregated from the Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) sector. The institution noted that this continued growth reflects improving formalisation and tighter oversight of small-scale mining activities. The GoldBod further announced the successful acquisition of 119.78 kilogrammes of gold from large-scale mining (LSM) companies for the Bank of Ghana’s reserves, estimated at US$11.82 million. This forms part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen Ghana’s gold-backed reserves and enhance the stability of the national economy. On export performance, the GoldBod reported...

Analysis: Understanding the royalty rules behind Ghana’s lithium deal

Ghana’s renegotiated lithium mining lease has finally reached parliament after a long delay. It is now before the committee on lands and natural resources for scrutiny before any possible approval and eventual debate and ratification on the floor of the house.  According to the chair of the natural resources committee, Collins Dauda, the committee is in no rush to push the lease through without full stakeholder engagement.  The majority on the committee also notes that the 2026 budget debate is ongoing in the house, meaning the lithium lease may not be submitted until next year.  This slower pace is commendable as public scrutiny is essential, and resource governance in Ghana has long suffered from poor utilization of the rents paid by mining companies. At a media briefing on November 25, 2025, the majority on the committee attempted to clarify speculation about revisions to the fiscal terms of the lithium lease.  When the agreement was first signed in 2023, Gh...

She revealed that Sub-Saharan Africa is expected to generate up to 230 million digital jobs by 2030, presenting major opportunities for Ghana provided companies make strategic investments today. Al-Hassan explained that workplaces worldwide are transitioning from manual and digitised systems to intelligent, AI-powered processes that improve decision-making, enhance productivity, and unlock ...

Speaker urges collaboration to improve state institutions' credibility

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin has urged deeper collaboration among the public, the media, and key state institutions as part of efforts to restore declining public trust in Ghana’s democratic structures. Drawing on the latest Afrobarometer survey, he noted with concern that Members of Parliament, ministries, departments, and agencies, and assembly members occupy the lowest ranks of public confidence among 14 institutions assessed. Speaking at the maiden Speaker’s Public Financial Management Dialogue in Accra, on the theme “Parliament, the Press, and the Purse: Building Accountability through Dialogue,” Bagbin emphasized the indispensable role of both Parliament and the media in strengthening public financial management and rebuilding confidence in elected officials. Our gathering today provides an opportunity to begin reshaping that narrative,” he said. “By working together, Parliament and the press help citizens understand how national resource...

MTN battles sabotage and blackouts as it expands network coverage in the middle belt

By Edward Adjei Frimpong MTN Ghana is stepping up efforts to expand network coverage across underserved communities in the country’s middle belt — even as the company battles a surge in fibre-optic cable cuts that continue to disrupt telecommunications services and pose growing security concerns. Across the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions, the operator recorded 211 fibre-cut incidents between January and November 2025, many caused by ongoing road construction. But MTN says an increasing number are deliberate acts of sabotage, carried out by criminals who disable network connectivity to facilitate armed robbery and other attacks. Communities already struggling with poor coverage are often plunged into complete communication blackouts. The disruption has slowed data services, interrupted mobile money transactions and pushed up operational costs. In some affected towns — including Sampa, Drobo, Goaso and Mim — MTN’s attempts to mount aerial fibre lines have been undermined by the ...

Every Ghanaian now owes GHc19,387

…as Ghana's Public Debt Rises to GH¢684.6bn Ghana's public debt rose by GH¢71.6 billion in the third quarter of 2025, reaching GH¢684.6 billion ($55.1 billion) as of September, according to the Bank of Ghana’s latest Summary of Economic and Financial Data for the period ending November 2025. This translates to every Ghanaian owing approximately GH¢19,387, with the country's debt per capita standing at around $403.7 USD, more than twice the average monthly income. This however, compares favourably with debt figures during the same period last year. As of July 2024, every Ghanaian owed around GH¢22,076, with the country's total public debt standing at GH¢761.2 billion, representing 75.7% of Ghana's GDP. The 2024 figure was a significant increase from July 2023, when the debt was GH¢587.7 billion, or 70.3% of GDP. Despite the marginal increase in 2025, Ghana's debt burden is showing signs of improvement, with a debt-to-GDP ratio of 48.9%, up from 43.8% in June. T...

BoG's Big Move: Monetary Policy Rate Cut to Boost Employment and Economic Growth

The Bank of Ghana has reduced its Monetary Policy Rate by 350 basis points to 18 percent. This marks one of the steepest policy easing decisions in recent years. The Central Bank cut the rate over sustained progress in taming inflation, a stabilising currency and improved macroeconomic conditions that create room to support growth. The Bank of Ghana's decision to slash its Monetary Policy Rate from 21.5% to 18% is expected to have a significant impact on employment and economic expansion. According to Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama, the economy has entered a period of improved stability, with a strong rebound in the external sector and a stable inflation profile. This has created room for the Central Bank to reduce the policy rate, making borrowing cheaper and increasing access to credit for businesses and households. The reduction is expected to translate into lower lending rates, offering relief to businesses and households that have struggled with high borrowing costs. This, in t...

IGP Yohuno's Contract Extension: Who Is Behind

The extension of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno's contract has sparked controversy, with critics accusing President John Mahama's administration of hypocrisy. However, the Jubilee House insists the decision is in line with Article 199 (4) of the constitution, allowing the president to grant contract extensions to public servants after retirement. Sources reveal that COP Lydia Yaako-Donkor, Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and next in line to be IGP, led the lobby for Yohuno's contract extension. COP Yaako-Donkor's strong legal background and reputation as a tough crime fighter made her voice crucial in persuading the Jubilee House. The junior ranks of the Ghana Police Service, represented by Chief Inspector Angel Lolo, also backed the extension, citing Yohuno's efforts to improve their welfare and reorganize the police service. Yohuno's experience and transformational leadership are seen as key factors...

Takeaways from COP30 Climate Summit in Brazil

The U.N. Climate Change Summit ended this year with a shaky compromise that ignored most of the countries' main demands, except for one: wealthy countries were obligated to triple their expenditures to help other countries adapt to global warming. Here are some key takeaways from COP30, the climate summit that took place in Brazil's Amazonian city of Belem. HOOKED UP TO HYDROCARBONES Luiz Inacio Lula, the President of Brazil, had called on countries to adopt a "roadmap" to move forward with a COP28 commitment to abandon fossil fuels. The summit was doomed to failure, however, because oil-rich Arab countries and other nations dependent on fossil fuels obstructed any discussion of the topic. The COP30 presidency instead created a voluntary climate plan, which countries could either sign up for or reject. It was similar to Egypt’s COP27 or Azerbaijan’s COP29 where countries agreed to spend money on climate threats while ignoring the primary cause. Since 2020, coal, oil...

COP30 Delivers Strong Signal on Climate Cooperation, Says UN Climate Chief

The just ended COP30 summit in Belém, Brazil, has sent a strong signal that climate cooperation is alive and kicking, despite challenging political headwinds, according to UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell. In his closing remarks, Stiell emphasized that 194 countries have reaffirmed their commitment to the Paris Agreement, with a shared goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The shift from fossil fuels to renewables and resilience is unstoppable, and it's gathering pace," Stiell said, highlighting key outcomes from the summit. These include the mobilization of $1 trillion for clean energy grids, the protection or restoration of hundreds of millions of hectares of forest, land, and oceans, and making over 400 million people more resilient. Stiell noted that the negotiated text achieved unanimous agreement on key agenda items, including just transition, gender, and the tripling of adaptation finance. He also pointed to the Mutirao text, which s...

Azul Airlines' Big Letdown: A Travel Nightmare at Brazil's Campinas Airport

I had the shock of my life at the Belém International Airport in Brazil. I booked a flight with Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras (Azul airline) from Belém to Sao Paolo, and when I got to the check-in counter, the attendant asked me to pay for my luggage. I was taken aback, considering I only had one bag, weighing less than 23kg - well within the accepted weight limit, and I'm someone who always travels light. In fact, if you know me well, you'll know that I'm quite particular about packing light. I once had an issue with US immigration at JFK with how light my luggage was, but that's a story for another day. Back to the issue at hand, the attendant showed me a price list, and I was told to pay 200 reals equivalent to US$ 40 for my luggage. I asked her why my luggage fee wasn't included in the price of the ticket, and she said that's the practice here. I was shocked - how do I pay for a ticket worth over a thousand dollars and still have to pay extra for my small...

A Resilient Legacy’ says Rocky Dawuni as he Mourns Tulsa Massacre Survivor's death

Ghanaian multi-Grammy-nominee and cultural ambassador Rocky Dawuni is paying tribute to Viola Ford Fletcher, the oldest survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre, who passed away at 111 on Tuesday, November 25, 2025. Dawuni recalled his meeting Fletcher and her late brother Van Ellis in Ghana, praising their courage and determination. Viola’s life was a testament to the power of resilience and forgiveness,” Dawuni said to TheAfricanDream.net about when he met Viola on her visit to Ghana (she’s also a citizen of Ghana) in 2021, adding that “her advocacy for justice and reparations inspires me to continue promoting unity and understanding.“ Dawuni’s tribute highlights Viola’s dedication to preserving the history of the Tulsa Race Massacre. “We must honor her legacy by acknowledging the past and working towards a more equitable future, especially in these trying political times globally” he said. Viola’s passing leaves Lessie Benningfield Randle, 111, as the only living survivor, he is however ...

PRINPAG Welcomes Government's Proposal to Establish National Media Fund, Urges Swift Action

The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has expressed its profound appreciation to the Government of Ghana for its bold proposal to establish a National Media Fund. This initiative comes at a pivotal moment when the media industry is grappling with escalating operational costs, dwindling advertising revenue, limited access to training opportunities, and growing sustainability challenges—particularly among smaller and privately owned media organisations. PRINPAG respectfully acknowledges President John Dramani Mahama for his thoughtfulness and longstanding commitment to media development," said David Tamakloe, on behalf of PRINPAG. "We recall that he first introduced the concept of a national media support mechanism during his first term in office, although its objectives could not be fully realized before the conclusion of that administration in 2016." PRINPAG is urging the government to expedite the processes toward the establi...

Ghanaian Exporters Rejoice as U.S. Scraps 15% Tariff on Cocoa and Other Products

The Importers & Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) has expressed its heartfelt commendation to the Government of Ghana, particularly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for successfully negotiating the removal of the punitive 15% export tariffs imposed by the United States on Ghanaian cocoa and other qualifying agricultural products. This decisive diplomatic achievement, effective as of November 13, 2025, marks a significant milestone for Ghana's trade community and export-driven growth. The removal of tariffs is expected to restore duty-free or reduced-barrier access to markets for key Ghanaian products such as cocoa, avocado, cashew nuts, mango, and plantain, thereby safeguarding Ghanaian exporters' competitiveness and preserving vital foreign exchange inflows. This development vindicates long-held concerns within the business community," said Samson Asaki Awingobit, Executive Secretary of IEAG. "The tariff impositions were already undermining Ghana's expo...

SEC warns public over rising TV “money doubling” scams

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has cautioned the general public about the growing number of suspected fraudulent investment schemes—commonly referred to as “money doubling” schemes—being advertised on some television stations across the country. In a public notice, the SEC emphasised that these schemes promise unusually high returns with little or no risk, a characteristic typical of fraudulent operations designed to lure unsuspecting investors into handing over their money. According to the Commission, none of the schemes currently being advertised have been approved, authorised, or licensed by the SEC. It, therefore, urged the public to be vigilant and avoid investing in products or services offered by these unlicensed entities. The SEC further warned individuals and groups involved in promoting such schemes that their actions constitute a criminal offence under Section 144(1) of the Securities Industry Act, as amended, and Section 294(1)(b) of the Companies Act. ...

Spare part prices drop in Abossey Okai; more cuts expected in 2026 – Dealers

The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has reported that prices of spare parts have started to decline and are expected to continue falling through the end of the year. This development follows recent engagements led by the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, with the leadership of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), spare parts dealers, and transport operators. During these meetings, stakeholders were urged to address persistent price irregularities and the recent spikes recorded across major markets. Speaking to Citi News on Monday, November 24, the Association’s Head of Communications, Takyi Addo, said a meeting is scheduled this week with importers and retailers to negotiate further price reductions, which could extend into 2026. Some prices have already been reduced, but more needs to be done. The reductions we expect are not yet fully visible. From now until the end of the year, more prices will drop, and in 2026, we a...

BoG’s Monetary Policy Committee begins 127th meeting as market anticipates possible rate cut

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) begins its 127th meeting today, November 24, 2025, with discussions expected to centre on key macroeconomic developments shaping the country’s recovery trajectory. The meeting will review current economic conditions and signal the central bank’s policy direction for the final weeks of 2025. The Committee convenes at a time when the Ghana Cedi has experienced relative stability after a brief depreciation earlier in the year – an episode the central bank described as a market correction rather than a reversal in the currency’s overall trend. Despite this stability over the past few months, the Cedi has begun showing marginal depreciation, partly driven by heightened demand for dollars ahead of the Christmas trading season. Inflation has also continued its downward path. Consumer inflation fell to 8 percent in October, driven by sustained tight monetary policy, fiscal consolidation, and improved food supply conditions. T...
