Ghana Eggs Campaign Pushes for Increased Egg Consumption to Check Diabetes

Madam Comfort Acheampong, National Coordinator of the Ghana Eggs Campaign Secretariat (GNECS), has emphasized the importance of eggs in a healthy diet, particularly for diabetics.

Speaking at a health screening exercise at the 37 Military Hospital organized by the Ghana Armed Forces Health Services to mark World Diabetes Day, Acheampong encouraged people to eat eggs, citing their nutritional benefits. She noted that eggs are a superfood that can help manage diabetes and encouraged people to include them in their diet.

We are encouraging people to eat eggs and most people think that if you are diabetic, you should not eat eggs, but research results show that eggs are a superfood that can help manage diabetes," Said Comfort Acheampong, National Coordinator, Ghana Eggs Campaign Secretariat

Acheampong also appealed to the government to sponsor the Ghana Egg Campaign, which has been instrumental in promoting egg consumption in the country, explaining that the secretariat no longer receives support from the American Soy Association’s World Initiative for Soy in Human Health programme. She highlighted the success of the campaign, which has led to an increase in egg consumption in the past years.

Acheampong added that if the directive is carried out, about 3.5 million school children with be provided with essential nutrients which are found in eggs. She therefore called on poultry farmers to team up with the government to ensure successful implementation.

The Chief Dietician at the 37 Hospital, Hamdaratu Dauda Wumbei, emphasized the need to increase fiber-rich foods to enhance blood sugar control, manage weight, and reduce the risk of complications associated with diabetes.

She highlighted the benefits of consuming avocados, legumes, cereals, fruits, and vegetables and among others. She noted that such foods help regulate glucose levels and lower the rate of diabetes in the country.

She advised residents to exercise regularly, maintain a healthy diet, and seek medical attention to address health concerns promptly.

The health screening exercise, which attracted over 500 participants, provided free fruits and eggs to boost immune systems. The eggs were provided by Greater Accra egg distributor associations (Achimota new station, Lapaz new market, Madina market, etc).

World Diabetes Day 2025 is observed annually on November 14. This year’s theme was “Diabetes Across Life Stages:  Strengthening Integrated Care For Diabetes Management,” with a special focus on promoting a healthy workplace and balanced lifestyle.
