MTN Ghana Introduces Biodegradable SIM Cards

As part of efforts reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainability in the telecom industry, MTN Ghana has introduced biodegradable SIM cards, made from 100% FSC-certified materials sourced from responsibly managed forests. These eco-friendly SIM cards decompose within three to six months in landfills, soil, or seawater, minimizing environmental harm.

Announcing the introduction of the biodegradable SIM cards at the launch of MTN's Sustainability Week in Accra, Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, MTN Ghana, explained that this initiative is part of the company's broader commitment to environmental sustainability and operational efficiency.

The company aims to reduce its ecological footprint while delivering innovative and customer-friendly solutions," she noted.

By adopting biodegradable SIM cards, MTN Ghana is encouraging customers to make more sustainable choices and reduce plastic waste.

The introduction of biodegradable SIM cards is a significant leap towards reducing plastic waste in Ghana. With an estimated 180 million SIM cards produced annually in South Africa alone, the impact of this initiative could be substantial. MTN Ghana is also promoting e-SIM technology, which eliminates the need for physical SIM cards and further reduces waste.

MTN Ghana's efforts demonstrate its dedication to aligning business growth with environmental responsibility. The company's initiatives serve as a model for corporate responsibility and forward-thinking environmental action in Ghana's telecom industry.
