The Chamber of Mines is taking steps to develop a standardized framework for land acquisition in the mining sector.
According to Ahmed Nantogmah, Chief Operating Officer of the Chamber of Mines, the current land acquisition process is often marred by challenges and difficulties, which can drag on for a long time.
Nantogmah, in an interview after a land access consultative workshop in Accra, explained that the Chamber in collaboration with regulators and mining companies are working to develop a framework that will simplify land acquisition and compensation processes.
We thought that we bring the regulators and the mining companies into a room where we can have a framework that will make land acquisition simplified within the mining industry," he said.

Challenges in Land Acquisition
Nantogmah highlighted the challenges associated with land acquisition, including speculators and individuals negotiating for land on behalf of communities. He also noted that the lack of standardization usually leads to varying compensation rates and resettlement packages, which are usually be costly and time-consuming.
Benefits of Standardization
To streamline this, the standardized framework aims to provide clarity and transparency in land acquisition, ensuring that both mining companies and communities have a clear understanding of the process and requirements. This, in turn, will facilitate win-win negotiations and reduce the risk of disputes and litigation.

The Chamber of Mines plans to finalize the framework as soon as possible, with the goal of promoting sustainable and responsible mining practices in Ghana. By standardizing land acquisition processes, the chamber aims to reduce conflicts and ensure that mining benefits both communities and the country as a whole.
The stakeholder workshop on land access for mining was held to discuss the challenges and opportunities in the sector. The workshop, organized by the Chamber of Mines, brought together representatives from mining companies, regulators including the Tree Crop Development Authority, Land Valuation Division, and other stakeholders to share perspectives and develop solutions.
The workshop focused on the importance of land access for mining operations and the need for a standardized framework to guide the process. Participants discussed the challenges associated with land acquisition, including compensation and resettlement, and explored ways to improve the process.

The workshop also examined the regulatory framework governing land access for mining and identified areas for improvement. Participants emphasized the need for clarity and transparency in land acquisition processes, as well as the importance of community engagement and participation.
Additionally, the Chamber of Mines is working with government agencies, including the Town and Country Planning Department, to develop a framework for housing for communities that may be impacted by mining activities and needs resettlement. Nantogmah emphasized the need for collaboration to ensure that the framework is fair and effective.
