Ghana’s economy expands 4.5% in July 2025 as GSS introduces new growth tracker

Ghana’s economy grew by 4.5 percent year-on-year in July 2025.

This is according to data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), which released the maiden edition of its Monthly Indicator of Economic Growth (MIEG) — a new analytical tool designed to provide a more frequent snapshot of the country’s economic performance between quarterly GDP releases.

The index rose from 105.4 in July 2024 to 110.2 in July 2025, indicating continued momentum in economic activity despite global and domestic headwinds.

However, the figure represents a slowdown from the 8.3% growth recorded in July 2024, indicating a moderation in the pace of economic activity despite continued expansion across key sectors.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, the Government Statistician, Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu, highlighted that the agriculture sector was the key driver of growth, expanding by 8.0 percent, supported by improved crop yields and increased productivity in food staples.

The industrial sector, however, recorded a marginal growth of 0.1 percent, due to challenges in energy supply and manufacturing output, while the services sector maintained moderate gains.

Dr. Iddrisu explained that the MIEG will serve as an early indicator of shifts in economic activity, enabling policymakers, investors, and businesses to make more timely and informed decisions.

E&P takes over Black Volta and Sankofa Gold projects after years of delay

Indigenous mining firm Engineers & Planners (E&P) has acquired Azumah Resources Ghana Ltd and Upwest Resources Ghana Ltd, taking full control of the long-stalled Black Volta and Sankofa gold concessions in the Upper West Region. The transaction, registered with the Registrar of Companies and approved by the Minerals Commission, ends nearly two decades of under-investment, legal disputes, and capital shortfalls that kept the concessions dormant. With global gold prices trading above $3,000 per ounce, the move comes at a time when Ghana is seeking fresh mining revenue to support its IMF-backed fiscal consolidation programme. E&P announced that it has secured funding to begin mine development and has committed to repaying verified debts associated with the projects.
