MTN's zero rated websites to continue until covid is over


The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Serlom Adadevoh, has announced that the Y’ello care package which gives customers the opportunity to access a variety of learning channels to support their children’s learning and entertainment needs during Covid-19 will still continue until the pandemic is over.

Speaking with journalists and some industry stakeholders in its maiden virtual annual Editor's forum in Accra, he said the package was introduce to alleviate the burden imposed on parents by the Covid-19 pandemic "so until the pandemic goes away those websites will still be zero rated"

He added that “Our customers are very important to us and we believe the zero rating of over 25 educational online sites is a great relief to our customers and their children and other dependents. MTN will continue to explore other opportunities to make life a whole lot brighter even in these difficult times”.

MTN Ghana alone has so far seen a whopping 150 Terabytes of free data consumed on its platform due to the zero-rated offer it gave.

As part of measures to minimize the spread of COVID-19, the Government of Ghana closed down Universities, Senior High Schools and basic schools from 16th March, 2020 till further notice. The Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Ministry of Communication were therefore tasked to roll out distance learning programmes.

MTN Ghana has already started several communications through various channels such as SMS, Social Media etc. to provide customers with updates on the Corona virus.  Personal hygiene tips on how to manage the virus have also been shared. it also deployed Safety tips as caller tunes for both prepaid and post-paid customers.

MTN MoMo further announced incentives which included the removal of transaction cost approved by the Bank of Ghana to enable customers adopt MoMo for financial transactions to minimize the risk posed by cash handling.

Additionally, MTN zero rated the website of the Ghana Health Service. This enables Customers to read and access information on COVID 19 free of charge.

Selorm Adadevoh also used the opportunity to confirm that MTN Ghana was on track to become a digital operator by the end of 2023.

The MTN Editors and Stakeholder Forum is held across the country annually to engage senior media practitioners and stakeholders of the business to share insights into the business operations for the year and for the future.  Similar virtual forums will be held with the media in other parts of the country.
