  Solar Taxi, has been assembling electric vehicles in Ghana and is the third largest electric vehicle assembler in Africa.   The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on Wednesday (Sept 27] paid a visit to the start-up, SolarTaxi.     They assemble motorcycles, cars, and buses.   "It was a pleasure to take a ride in one of their buses which can travel from Accra to Kumasi without need for a recharge of the batteries. They are also able to convert existing internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles," Vice President Bawumia said when he visited the plant on Wednesday.     Dr Bawumia made the point that electric vehicles are the future and the government was working on a policy framework of using electric vehicles for public transport in Ghana.     "This will drastically reduce the cost of transportation as the major components of the cost is fuel and spare parts.  Chief Executive Officer of Solar Taxi, a Ghanaian electric vehicles (EV) company, Jorge Appiah has hinted that beginning from next year the company will start assembling electric cars in Ghana. Speaking on  21 Minutes with KKB , he said currently the company assembles electric motorbikes and tricycles in Ghana, which are patronized heavily by delivery service companies. According to him, the Ghanaian engineers at Solar Taxi, 90 per cent of whom are women, design the motorbike and tricycle models, import the components and assemble them at the company’s plants in Accra and Kumasi. This comes at a time when Ghana government, through the energy ministry, is leading the charge to ensure that is ready to welcome electric vehicles into the transportation system.
