The Krachi East Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Safo Nketiah, has commended Zoomlion Ghana Limited for its numerous interventions in the area, stressing that the company's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities were complementing the assembly's development efforts. Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources engagement with Metropolitan Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in Ho, Volta Region on Saturday, September 19, 2026, Hon. Nketiah outlined a series of interventions undertaken by the assembly with support from Zoomlion, which he said deserved recognition and spotlight. He noted that the company had been a reliable partner, particularly in ensuring that the municipality was always clean. According to him, Zoomlion’s collaboration with the Krachi East Municipal Assembly has been effective, which has seen the company offer various free waste management services. We are collaborati...

Is Manasseh Audithing The Auditor-General Or Putting Zoomlion On Trial As Usual?

A Question of Fairness I am a Ghanaian writer passionate about environmental sanitation and the work of private waste management companies, especially the prestigious Zoomlion Ghana Limited. I am concerned when people, including Manasseh Azure Awuni, appear to undermine a company that has created jobs, helped address sanitation challenges and contributed to Ghana becoming the West African regional hub for sanitation, waste management, and circular economy policy support. For more than a decade, Manasseh has unjustifiably criticised Zoomlion and its owner, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, through articles and commentaries that, in my view, have focused almost exclusively on alleged wrongdoing while rarely acknowledging the company’s achievements or its owner’s ingenuity. That raises a fundamental question: Can journalism be considered fair and balanced when its scrutiny of one company remains overwhelmingly negative over many years? Constructive criticism, we all know, should identify pr...

The exercise, organised in collaboration with the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC), is being rolled out across all 18 municipalities and districts in the region and is expected to end on September 19. Amemakalor said although the floods recorded in the region were less severe than those experienced in some other parts of the country, the potential public health risks associated with the disaster could not be overlooked. He explained that the aftermath of the floods could increase the risk of malaria due to mosquito breeding, while floodwaters could also spread cholera and other waterborne diseases...

Zoomlion Disinfects Assemblies in Central Region

Zoomlion Company Limited, on Thursday, 20th August, 2026, began an eight-day disinfection and disinfestation exercise across selected public facilities in 22 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Central Region. The exercise, carried out in collaboration with the Central Regional Coordinating Council and District Assemblies, targeted schools, markets, health facilities and public places of convenience identified through rapid risk assessments by the respective Assemblies. It was a necessary response to the nationwide floods that affected many communities and inundated public facilities. The flooding had increased the risk of environmental contamination and created breeding grounds for disease vectors, heightening the possibility of outbreaks of water- and vector-borne illnesses. The intervention formed part of an agreement between Zoomlion Company Limited and government to provide large-scale disinfection and pest-control services periodically. The operati...

The Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, has reaffirmed the government's commitment to restoring communities affected by the devastating June 29 floods, saying the military has been fully mobilised to lead the nationwide clean-up exercise ordered by President John Dramani Mahama. Speaking during a visit to assess ongoing clean-up operations, Brogya Genfi said the two-day exercise, directed by President Mahama following the floods that claimed about 30 lives and left large parts of Accra submerged, is aimed at clearing refuse, desilting drains and preventing disease outbreaks. He noted that the President's personal involvement in the exercise underscores the urgency of the response and the government's determination to protect lives and property. The Commander-in-Chief, President John Dramani Mahama, is himself on the ground, so we cannot fail the citizens. At the Ministry of Defence, we are providing the strategic direction for the military to deliver the supp...

Local Government Minister Urges Zoomlion to Keep Achimota Waste Transfer Station Open for Tricycle Operators

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ibrahim Ahmed, has urged Zoomlion Ghana Limited to keep its  waste transfer stations operational to support tricycle waste operators until a permanent solution to the area's sanitation challenges is implemented. Speaking during a visit to the Achimota Waste Transfer Station, the Minister said the six facilities have become a critical component of the government's efforts to improve waste collection and transportation within the metropolis. He explained that the transfer stations receive refuse collected by tricycle operators, where it is sorted, compacted and transferred through an underground system before being transported to designated final disposal sites. According to the Minister, the temporary arrangement was necessitated by the increasing volume of waste generated in the metropolis after the June 29th floods, which has placed considerable pressure on existing waste management infrastructure. To ens...

NADMO, Zoomlion Launch Multi-Site Drain Clearing Exercise to Curb Flooding in Greater Accra

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), in partnership with Zoomlion Ghana Limited and other collaborating institutions, on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, intensified its flood preparedness efforts with a large-scale drain-clearing exercise at multiple flood-prone locations across the Greater Accra Region to improve the free flow of stormwater and minimise the risk of flooding ahead of the next expected rains. The exercise forms part of the 12-week “No Do No Do” campaign, launched last month to promote environmental responsibility, strengthen flood preparedness and complement ongoing public education with practical interventions. Under the campaign, NADMO and its partners are undertaking post-flood assessments and desilting exercises while encouraging residents to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains. Addressing the media during the exercise, the Greater Accra Regional Director of NADMO, Dennis Nartey, said the campaign was introduced in response to t...

Floods Don't Happen by Chance

By Dr Robert Kwaku Adjei Flooding Is Not Entirely Natural Every rainy season, flooding returns to Accra and many other towns and cities across Ghana. Homes are submerged, businesses suffer heavy losses, roads become impassable, public infrastructure is damaged, and, tragically, lives are sometimes lost. After every major flood, public attention quickly turns to government, climate change, drainage systems, or rainfall intensity. While these are undoubtedly important factors, they do not tell the whole story. The uncomfortable truth is that many of our floods are preventable. Rain may be natural, but flooding on the scale we repeatedly experience is largely a human-made disaster. Every year, thousands of tonnes of plastic waste, silt, sand, household refuse, and construction debris enter drains, streams, lagoons, and rivers. As these drainage channels become blocked, stormwater has nowhere to flow, leading to widespread flooding. The current flooding in Accra and several parts of ...

The Rising Flooding Crisis in Ghana and the Urgent Need to Reinstate the YEA- Zoomlion Contract

Ghana is once again witnessing severe and devastating flooding across several parts of the country, particularly within the Greater Accra Region. Homes, shops, roads, businesses, and public infrastructure have been destroyed, while many innocent Ghanaians continue to suffer painful losses, displacement, and economic hardship due to the recurring floods. A major contributing factor to the worsening flooding situation is the discontinuation of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) street sweeping and public cleansing contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited. Since the expiration and non-renewal of the contract, visible sanitation challenges have resurfaced across many communities. Choked gutters, uncollected waste, silted drains, and indiscriminate dumping of refuse have become increasingly common, significantly affecting the free flow of water during heavy rains. It is important to recall that following the devastating June 3, 2015 floods and disaster, Ghana did not experience flooding of ...

Cancellation of Zoomlion Contract Worsens Accra Flooding.

In the wake of this year's rainy season, Accra, Ghana's capital city, is experiencing severe flooding. This is not an exaggeration. The slightest rainfall now turns the national capital into a disaster zone. For houses built on and along waterways, the least said about them the better. Their residents wake up every morning fearing the next downpour. So far, areas hit hard include Kaneshie Market and its environs, Agbogbloshie, Mallam, Madina, Santa Maria, and many others. What has compounded matters is that the rains have shown no signs of easing. If for anything at all, we should be bracing ourselves for more rains. It is as if the floodgates of heaven have been opened upon Accra and, by extension, Ghana. But here is the question that no one in authority seemed willing to answer honestly until now: Why is this happening after successive years of relative calm? For so many years, it has rained in Accra. Sometimes heavily. Yet the floods have not been this destructive for the p...

Zoomlion Begins Nationwide Fumigation in Accra

Zoomlion Ghana Limited has launched a nationwide emergency fumigation and disinfection exercise, a coordinated national response that begins in flood-ravaged Greater Accra before rolling out to other regions, according to the Head of Emergency Management at the Jospong Group, Dr. Gideon Sogbey. The operation, which commenced on Monday, June 22, 2026, initially targets parts of the Weija-Gbawe Municipality, Ablekuma North Municipality, and the McCarthy Hill enclave, areas where recent floods have left behind significant sanitation hazards, including accumulated filth, faecal matter, sewage and other contaminants. This is a nationwide exercise, and although we have started in Greater Accra, we have already identified several flood-prone communities across other regions for similar interventions," " Dr. Sogbey disclosed while speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the exercise. He explained that the initiative forms part of a broader national effort to strengthen Water, Sa...

Ltd and other partners on Wednesday, June 17, intensified its flood prevention and drainage desilting exercise across several vulnerable communities in the Greater Accra Region as the country enters the peak of the rainy season. The large-scale intervention, which forms part of a broader disaster preparedness strategy, is aimed at reducing the impact of seasonal flooding that continues to threaten lives, property and economic activity across the capital. The exercise has brought together sanitation personnel, engineers, heavy equipment operators, local authorities, security agencies and community members in a coordinated effort to improve stormwater flow and strengthen flood resilience. Early in the morning teams were deployed to critical flood hotspots including Teshie-Nungua, the Osu Castle beachfront area, Achimota and Abokobi for debris collection, Desilting and dre...

The initiative comes in the wake of recent heavy downpours that have triggered flooding in some parts of the capital, raising concerns about the impact of poor waste disposal practices and clogged drainage syste...
