Zoomlion Intensifies Disinfection and Disinfestation Exercise in Oti Region

Zoomlion Ghana Limited has intensified its seven-day disinfection and disinfestation exercise across the Oti Region as part of efforts to prevent disease outbreaks and improve environmental sanitation following recent flooding in parts of the country.

The exercise, which commenced simultaneously in the Krachi East and West Municipalities, is expected to cover all nine Municipal and District Assemblies (MDAs) in the region. It is being undertaken in collaboration with the respective Assemblies, which have identified priority areas requiring the intervention.

The exercise targets markets, shops and sheds, public toilets, drains and gutters, refuse container sites, waste-dumping areas, flood-prone communities and other public spaces considered potential breeding grounds for disease vectors and harmful pathogens.

Speaking to the media during the exercise, the Oti Regional Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Joseph Buabeng, said the intervention formed part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and its broader commitment to protecting public health and supporting local authorities in addressing sanitation challenges.

He explained that the intervention went beyond conventional fumigation to include comprehensive disinfection and disinfestation aimed at controlling disease vectors, reducing harmful pathogens and mitigating the risk of waterborne and other communicable diseases associated with flooding and poor sanitation.

Our objective is to protect residents from diseases that commonly emerge after flooding. We do not want to wait until there is an outbreak before taking action. This is a proactive measure aimed at safeguarding public health and protecting lives,” Buabeng stated.

According to him, floodwaters could carry sewage, waste and other contaminants into drains, waterways and public spaces, thereby increasing the risk of diseases such as cholera, particularly in communities already facing sanitation challenges.

Buabeng said particular attention was being given to waste-dumping sites and areas close to water bodies, where decomposing waste, leachate and increased fly populations could create significant environmental and public health risks.

He added that the exercise was in line with a directive from the Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, to support communities across the country in controlling vector-borne diseases and reducing the threat posed by harmful pathogens.

Beyond the immediate intervention, Buabeng called for sustainable and long-term solutions to Ghana’s sanitation challenges. These, he said, should include the development and maintenance of properly engineered landfill sites, stronger regulation of waste transportation and the establishment of strategically located waste transfer stations in rapidly growing municipalities.

The Environmental Health Officer at the Krachi East Municipal Assembly, Adem Atiase, commended Zoomlion for the intervention and expressed appreciation to the company for undertaking the exercise as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility.

He noted that the exercise would complement the Assembly’s environmental health efforts and contribute to making public spaces safer, cleaner and healthier for residents.

The intervention forms part of Zoomlion’s nationwide disinfection and disinfestation programme, which seeks to strengthen collaboration with local authorities, improve environmental sanitation, control disease vectors, prevent potential disease outbreaks and promote cleaner, safer and healthier communities across the country.

Fitch Solutions retains 2025 growth rate projection at 4.2%

Fitch Solutions has reaffirmed its projection that Ghana’s economy will expand by 4.2% in 2025. This estimate slightly exceeds the International Monetary Fund’s forecast of 4% and the World Bank’s projection of 3.9%. The UK-based research firm attributes its outlook to historically high gold prices, which are expected to cushion the Ghanaian economy against a global slowdown triggered by rising tariffs. Higher gold prices are anticipated to strengthen government revenue, enhance foreign exchange earnings, and help sustain currency stability. The report also highlights that Ghana is relatively less vulnerable to increasing trade restrictions from the United States, given that its primary exports—gold and crude oil—are not directly affected by the tariffs introduced by President Trump’s administration. Moreover, the US constitutes only about 4% to 5% of Ghana’s total exports. In contrast, Ghana’s trade relations are more heavily oriented toward China and European countries, particul...

BoG injects $20m into FX market to support 11 BDCs

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has injected $20 million into the foreign exchange market in the latest round of its forward FX auction targeted at Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs). The intervention, which benefited eleven BDCs, is part of the central bank’s broader strategy to stabilise the cedi and ensure price stability in the petroleum downstream sector. Held on Tuesday, April 29, the auction was priced at a locked exchange rate of GHS 14.28 to the US dollar, with bid offers ranging from GHS 13.85 to GHS 15.55. This move reflects the BoG’s continued effort to deepen forex liquidity and safeguard the domestic fuel supply chain against volatility in global energy markets. By directly supplying FX to BDCs, the central bank seeks to ease pressure on the interbank market, guarantee the uninterrupted flow of petroleum products, and mitigate the pass-through effects of exchange rate fluctuations on fuel prices. The $20 million disbursement forms part of a $120 million programme for th...
