MTN Ghana, Ghana Wildlife Society Promote Biodiversity Through Bird, Butterfly Walk

The MTN Ghana, in partnership with the Ghana Wildlife Society (GWS), has organised a bird and butterfly walk at the Legon Botanical Gardens in Accra for media personnel and CSOs to promote environmental sustainability and deepen appreciation for Ghana’s biodiversity.

The exercise, held on Saturday, August 29, 2026, brought together media practitioners and environmental enthusiasts for an educational and interactive experience aimed at highlighting the importance of conserving the country’s natural environment.

The walk was led by the Executive Director of the Ghana Wildlife Society, Dr. Sandra Owusu-Gyamfi, who used the occasion to encourage Ghanaians to reduce their dependence on plastics and adopt more environmentally friendly alternatives in their homes, workplaces and public spaces.

She warned that plastic pollution, particularly microplastics, posed a growing threat to marine life and ecosystems, stressing that individuals, businesses and institutions had a shared responsibility to reduce plastic waste.

Dr. Owusu-Gyamfi also drew participants’ attention to the ecological importance of birds, describing them as unique components of nature whose behaviour and way of life offered important lessons about coexistence and the environment.

She urged Ghanaians to develop a greater appreciation for birds, butterflies and other wildlife and to support efforts aimed at protecting the country’s biodiversity.

She described the walk as an opportunity for participants to reconnect with nature while strengthening relationships among MTN staff and members of the media.

Fiagbenu said the experience of walking through the botanical gardens, breathing fresh air and listening to the sounds of birds provided a refreshing and therapeutic break from participants’ daily routines.

The feeling is healing, and we feel good doing small actions to create big impact,” she said.

She said MTN was also integrating sustainability into its operations through initiatives such as the installation of solar panels at its offices and MTN House, as well as waste recycling programmes. She added that 50 per cent of the energy consumed at the MTN head office was generated from renewable sources

According to her, such interventions were supported by strong governance and ethical standards as the company sought to contribute to environmental protection and sustainable development.

Fiagbenu expressed appreciation to members of the media for participating in the exercise and expressed the hope that similar initiatives would continue to promote sustainability, wellbeing and positive social impact.

Media engagement

Senior Manager of Corporate Communications at MTN Ghana, Efua Falconer, said the initiative was also intended to expose the company’s media partners to emerging trends and issues surrounding sustainability.

She said as an innovative organisation, MTN continued to monitor developments in the environmental and sustainability space and wanted its media partners to better understand and share in those initiatives.

Falconer said engaging journalists through practical experiences such as the bird and butterfly walk could help deepen their understanding of environmental issues and strengthen public conversations about sustainable practices.

She noted that the media had an important role to play in educating the public and drawing attention to the responsibility of businesses and individuals to protect the environment.

A refreshing experience

President of the MTN Media Republic, Naa Dzagble Ago Quaye, commended members of the group who participated in the exercise, describing the experience as educative, interactive, inspiring and physically beneficial.

She said the initiative provided members with an opportunity to step away from their usual routines, connect with nature and gain a deeper understanding of the importance of conserving Ghana’s rich biodiversity.

Participants had the opportunity to observe various bird and butterfly species in their natural surroundings while learning about their ecological importance and the need for responsible environmental practices.

Beyond its environmental focus, the exercise also provided an informal platform for networking and interaction between MTN and members of the media community.

The organisers expressed optimism that the experience would inspire participants to adopt more environmentally responsible lifestyles and use their platforms to advocate for the protection and sustainable use of Ghana’s natural resources.

Fitch Solutions retains 2025 growth rate projection at 4.2%

Fitch Solutions has reaffirmed its projection that Ghana’s economy will expand by 4.2% in 2025. This estimate slightly exceeds the International Monetary Fund’s forecast of 4% and the World Bank’s projection of 3.9%. The UK-based research firm attributes its outlook to historically high gold prices, which are expected to cushion the Ghanaian economy against a global slowdown triggered by rising tariffs. Higher gold prices are anticipated to strengthen government revenue, enhance foreign exchange earnings, and help sustain currency stability. The report also highlights that Ghana is relatively less vulnerable to increasing trade restrictions from the United States, given that its primary exports—gold and crude oil—are not directly affected by the tariffs introduced by President Trump’s administration. Moreover, the US constitutes only about 4% to 5% of Ghana’s total exports. In contrast, Ghana’s trade relations are more heavily oriented toward China and European countries, particul...

BoG injects $20m into FX market to support 11 BDCs

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has injected $20 million into the foreign exchange market in the latest round of its forward FX auction targeted at Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs). The intervention, which benefited eleven BDCs, is part of the central bank’s broader strategy to stabilise the cedi and ensure price stability in the petroleum downstream sector. Held on Tuesday, April 29, the auction was priced at a locked exchange rate of GHS 14.28 to the US dollar, with bid offers ranging from GHS 13.85 to GHS 15.55. This move reflects the BoG’s continued effort to deepen forex liquidity and safeguard the domestic fuel supply chain against volatility in global energy markets. By directly supplying FX to BDCs, the central bank seeks to ease pressure on the interbank market, guarantee the uninterrupted flow of petroleum products, and mitigate the pass-through effects of exchange rate fluctuations on fuel prices. The $20 million disbursement forms part of a $120 million programme for th...
