GIPC: Foreign Investments to Generate Nearly 19,000 Jobs in Ghana

 Investments, GIPC, Ghana

Foreign investment projects registered in Ghana in 2025 are expected to create 18,748 jobs when the projects become fully operational, according to the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC).

The projected employment opportunities are linked to 254 new investment projects registered during the year, underscoring the potential contribution of foreign capital to job creation and economic activity.

The figures are contained in the GIPC’s 2025 Annual Investment Report, which shows that Ghanaians are expected to secure the majority of the projected jobs.

According to the report, 90.3% of the jobs are expected to go to Ghanaians, while expatriates are projected to account for the remaining 9.7%.

Foreign investment reaches US$2.62bn

Ghana attracted an estimated US$2.62 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows in 2025, with investment activity spread across several sectors of the economy.

The report indicates that substantial capital injections were recorded in the petroleum and free zones sectors, contributing significantly to the overall investment value.

China emerged as the leading source of registered projects, accounting for 70 projects, followed by India with 22, Nigeria with 10, the United Arab Emirates with nine and the United Kingdom with eight.

However, when measured by investment value, the Cayman Islands ranked first with US$500 million, followed by China with US$486 million.

Accra dominates investment activity

The Greater Accra Region remained the major destination for foreign investment, attracting 143 registered projects.

The Ashanti Region followed with 18 projects valued at US$15.99 million, while the Western and Eastern regions recorded nine and three projects respectively.

The report further shows that foreign investors continued to favour wholly owned operations, with 70.72% of registered projects being fully foreign-owned.

Joint ventures accounted for the remaining 29.28%.

GIPC forecasts higher inflows

The GIPC expects Ghana’s foreign investment performance to strengthen further over the next two years.

FDI inflows are projected to increase to US$2.8 billion in 2026, before rising further to US$3.1 billion in 2027.

The projected increase, if achieved, could provide additional opportunities for employment, technology transfer and expansion of productive capacity, particularly as registered investment projects move from the approval and development stages into full-scale operations.

The employment projections also highlight the importance of ensuring that new investment translates into sustainable jobs for Ghanaians, especially in sectors with significant capital requirements such as petroleum, manufacturing and free zones.

Fitch Solutions retains 2025 growth rate projection at 4.2%

Fitch Solutions has reaffirmed its projection that Ghana’s economy will expand by 4.2% in 2025. This estimate slightly exceeds the International Monetary Fund’s forecast of 4% and the World Bank’s projection of 3.9%. The UK-based research firm attributes its outlook to historically high gold prices, which are expected to cushion the Ghanaian economy against a global slowdown triggered by rising tariffs. Higher gold prices are anticipated to strengthen government revenue, enhance foreign exchange earnings, and help sustain currency stability. The report also highlights that Ghana is relatively less vulnerable to increasing trade restrictions from the United States, given that its primary exports—gold and crude oil—are not directly affected by the tariffs introduced by President Trump’s administration. Moreover, the US constitutes only about 4% to 5% of Ghana’s total exports. In contrast, Ghana’s trade relations are more heavily oriented toward China and European countries, particul...

BoG injects $20m into FX market to support 11 BDCs

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has injected $20 million into the foreign exchange market in the latest round of its forward FX auction targeted at Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs). The intervention, which benefited eleven BDCs, is part of the central bank’s broader strategy to stabilise the cedi and ensure price stability in the petroleum downstream sector. Held on Tuesday, April 29, the auction was priced at a locked exchange rate of GHS 14.28 to the US dollar, with bid offers ranging from GHS 13.85 to GHS 15.55. This move reflects the BoG’s continued effort to deepen forex liquidity and safeguard the domestic fuel supply chain against volatility in global energy markets. By directly supplying FX to BDCs, the central bank seeks to ease pressure on the interbank market, guarantee the uninterrupted flow of petroleum products, and mitigate the pass-through effects of exchange rate fluctuations on fuel prices. The $20 million disbursement forms part of a $120 million programme for th...
