Mobile Money Fintech targets deeper digital payments ecosystem

 By Edward Adjei Frimpong

Mobile Money Fintech LTD is positioning mobile money as a catalyst for financial inclusion, business growth and Ghana's transition to a cash-lite economy, as it pursues an ambitious strategy to deepen digital payments and expand access to financial services.

Mobile Money Manager for Northern Ghana, David Nana Addai, said MobileMoney Fintech LTD's 2026 strategy, themed "Do More with MoMo," would focus on strengthening wallet utility, supporting micro-enterprises, improving customer experience and building a resilient digital finance ecosystem.

He made the remarks during a panel discussion at MTN's media and stakeholder engagement in Sunyani.

According to Addai, Mobile Money Fintech, which was launched in 2009, has evolved from a money transfer platform into a comprehensive digital financial services ecosystem, serving more than 17 million registered subscribers through payments, remittances, savings and loans, BankTech, InsurTech and other value-added services.

He noted that the company's separation from Scancom PLC had sharpened its focus on innovation and the expansion of Ghana's fintech ecosystem through strategic partnerships with banks, fintechs, merchants, agents and regulators.

Collaboration remains central to our growth strategy because no single institution can build an inclusive digital finance ecosystem alone. We continue to work with industry players to improve interoperability, promote responsible digital finance and develop customer-centred financial solutions," he said.

Addai observed that mobile money had significantly transformed financial inclusion in Ghana, particularly for underserved and unbanked communities. He said the number of registered MoMo users had grown from about 17,000 in 2009 to approximately 17.2 million by 2024, supported by an extensive nationwide network of agents and merchants.

He added that digital payments had witnessed remarkable growth over the past decade, with industry transaction values increasing from GH¢2.7 billion in 2013 to about GH¢1.07 trillion in 2024, underscoring the growing confidence in electronic transactions.

Beyond payments, Addai said Mobile Money Fintech was investing in platform resilience and customer experience through system upgrades, enhanced security architecture, artificial intelligence-driven customer support tools, automated PIN reset, self-reversal services and real-time transaction monitoring.

He explained that the company was also strengthening its response to digital fraud through closer collaboration with the Cyber Security Authority, the Bank of Ghana, law enforcement agencies, banks, telecommunications operators and fintech companies to improve intelligence sharing and coordinated fraud prevention.

Looking ahead, he said Mobile Money Fintech envisaged a future where mobile money would extend beyond person-to-person transfers to become a comprehensive platform for payments, savings, credit, insurance, pensions, e-commerce and enterprise growth.

Our objective is not only to digitise payments but also to empower livelihoods, expand financial inclusion and build a secure and trusted digital economy that benefits every Ghanaian," Addai stated.

Fitch Solutions retains 2025 growth rate projection at 4.2%

Fitch Solutions has reaffirmed its projection that Ghana’s economy will expand by 4.2% in 2025. This estimate slightly exceeds the International Monetary Fund’s forecast of 4% and the World Bank’s projection of 3.9%. The UK-based research firm attributes its outlook to historically high gold prices, which are expected to cushion the Ghanaian economy against a global slowdown triggered by rising tariffs. Higher gold prices are anticipated to strengthen government revenue, enhance foreign exchange earnings, and help sustain currency stability. The report also highlights that Ghana is relatively less vulnerable to increasing trade restrictions from the United States, given that its primary exports—gold and crude oil—are not directly affected by the tariffs introduced by President Trump’s administration. Moreover, the US constitutes only about 4% to 5% of Ghana’s total exports. In contrast, Ghana’s trade relations are more heavily oriented toward China and European countries, particul...

BoG injects $20m into FX market to support 11 BDCs

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has injected $20 million into the foreign exchange market in the latest round of its forward FX auction targeted at Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs). The intervention, which benefited eleven BDCs, is part of the central bank’s broader strategy to stabilise the cedi and ensure price stability in the petroleum downstream sector. Held on Tuesday, April 29, the auction was priced at a locked exchange rate of GHS 14.28 to the US dollar, with bid offers ranging from GHS 13.85 to GHS 15.55. This move reflects the BoG’s continued effort to deepen forex liquidity and safeguard the domestic fuel supply chain against volatility in global energy markets. By directly supplying FX to BDCs, the central bank seeks to ease pressure on the interbank market, guarantee the uninterrupted flow of petroleum products, and mitigate the pass-through effects of exchange rate fluctuations on fuel prices. The $20 million disbursement forms part of a $120 million programme for th...
