MTN Ghana Foundation's 60-Bed Maternity And Child Health Block Transforms Maternal Healthcare In Keta

MTN Ghana Foundation's investment in maternal and child healthcare continues to deliver life-changing results, with the 60-bed Maternity and Child Health Block at the Keta Municipal Hospital significantly improving access to quality healthcare and contributing to better health outcomes for mothers and newborns in the Volta Region.

As part of efforts to assess the long-term impact of the project, the MTN Ghana Foundation, together with journalists from Accra and the Volta Region, undertook a media tour of the Keta Municipal Hospital. The visit, held two years after the facility became operational, offered the media an opportunity to witness firsthand how the state-of-the-art maternity block has transformed healthcare delivery for thousands of women and children.

The delegation was received by the Hospital Administrator, Farouk Iddrisu, and the hospital's management team, who led participants on a tour of the facility. The team observed that the hospital block remains in excellent condition and continues to provide a safe, modern and patient-friendly environment for maternal and neonatal care.

During interactions with healthcare professionals, patients and community members, there was overwhelming appreciation for the MTN Ghana Foundation's intervention, which has replaced the previously overcrowded maternity ward and strengthened the hospital's ability to provide comprehensive maternal and newborn healthcare.

Sharing the impact of the project, Iddrisu noted that the facility has transformed healthcare delivery by expanding access to skilled maternity services, improving patient care and strengthening the hospital's capacity to manage both routine and complicated maternal and neonatal cases.

The MTN Ghana Foundation's investment has changed the story of maternal healthcare in Keta. Mothers now receive care in a dignified environment with modern equipment, and our healthcare professionals are able to provide better quality services than ever before," he said.

Improving Access to Quality Maternal Healthcare

Since the commissioning of the facility, utilisation of maternal and child health services has continued to increase, reflecting growing public confidence in the hospital's expanded capacity.

Antenatal Care attendance increased from 8,641 clients in 2022 to 10,174 in 2025, while 4,635 women had already accessed antenatal services during the first half of 2026.

Maternity admissions also rose significantly from 1,966 in 2023 to 2,475 in 2025, representing an increase of approximately 26 percent. During the first six months of 2026 alone, the hospital recorded 1,331 maternity admissions.

The facility has also strengthened neonatal care services, with neonatal admissions increasing from 377 in 2024 to 501 in 2025, enabling the hospital to manage more newborn referrals that would previously have been transferred elsewhere.

Overall, the hospital now records approximately 25,000 antenatal care visits, admits about 3,000 pregnant women annually, and has safely delivered more than 3,000 babies since the facility became operational.

Saving Lives Through Better Healthcare

Beyond increased access, the project has contributed to significant improvements in maternal and newborn health outcomes.

Maternal mortality has reduced substantially since the introduction of the facility. From recording an average of two maternal deaths annually before the project, the hospital recorded just one maternal death in 2023 and no maternal deaths during the first half of 2026.

Similarly, the neonatal mortality ratio has improved from 6 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2022 to 1.3 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2024, while the hospital continues to manage increasingly complex neonatal cases with consistently low mortality rates.

These improvements have been made possible through enhanced clinical capacity, modern medical equipment, expanded inpatient space, improved infection prevention measures and better patient privacy.

A Lasting Investment in Community Health

The MTN Ghana Foundation's intervention has also strengthened the Keta Municipal Hospital's role as the primary referral centre for maternal and newborn healthcare within the municipality and neighbouring districts.

MTN Ghana, Maternal Healthcare, KetaThe modern facility has significantly improved the patient experience by providing a spacious, fully equipped environment that enables healthcare workers to deliver quality care while meeting the growing healthcare needs of the surrounding communities.

Speaking after the tour, representatives of the MTN Ghana Foundation reaffirmed the Foundation's commitment to investing in initiatives that improve lives and promote sustainable development.

The Foundation noted that healthcare remains one of its key focus areas and that investments in modern healthcare infrastructure continue to create lasting social impact by improving access to quality healthcare and supporting national efforts to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality.

The continued increase in service utilisation and the improved health outcomes recorded at the Keta Municipal Hospital demonstrate the lasting impact of the MTN Ghana Foundation's investment and underscore its commitment to improving maternal and child healthcare across Ghana.
