MTN Ghana Supports 70th Mepe Afenorto Festival with GH¢20,000

 MTN Ghana, Mepe, Afenorto Festival

MTN Ghana has renewed its commitment to the people of Mepe with a donation of GH¢20,000 towards the celebration of the 70th Afenorto Festival.

The company also presented airtime worth GH¢1,000 and drink hampers to support activities marking the annual festival of the Mepe Traditional Area.

The donation was presented by Efua Falconer, Acting Senior Manager, Corporate Communications at MTN Ghana, on Friday, August 7, 2026.

Falconer said MTN was pleased to stand with the people of Mepe as they marked seven decades of the Afenorto Festival, describing the occasion as an important celebration of culture, unity and community development.

She said the festival held particular significance this year as the people of Mepe continued efforts to recover and rebuild following the devastation caused by the Akosombo Dam spillage.

Since the Akosombo Dam spillage disrupted homes, farms and livelihoods across this Traditional Area, the road back has not been easy. Yet the spirit behind this year’s celebration, one of unity, investment and sustainable development, tells us something important: that Mepe is not just recovering, but rebuilding with purpose,” she said.

According to her, MTN’s continued support for the festival demonstrates the company’s belief in long-term partnerships with communities across Ghana.

She said Afenorto represented more than an annual cultural event, providing an opportunity for the people of Mepe to return home, reflect on their progress and collectively consider the future of the community.

Afenorto has always been more than a festival for the people of Mepe; it is a homecoming, a season of reflection, and a platform for charting the community’s path forward,” Falconer stated.

She noted that MTN Ghana is celebrating 30 years of operations in the country and was using the milestone to appreciate customers and communities that had contributed to its growth.

Falconer said the donation was therefore also a gesture of appreciation to the people of Mepe for their loyalty and partnership with the telecommunications company over the years.

Our support for the 70th Afenorto Festival is not only a contribution to this important celebration, but also a gesture of gratitude to the people of Mepe for their trust, loyalty, and partnership over the years,” she said.

She further stressed that MTN’s community engagement went beyond financial contributions, saying the company would be present during the festivities to interact with customers and address their concerns.

Real partnership shows up consistently, not just in moments of crisis,” she said, adding that MTN would continue to support traditional councils because culture remained an important foundation for strong communities.

Falconer expressed appreciation to Torgbe Korsi Nego VI, Chiefs and Elders of the Mepe Traditional Area, as well as the Mepe Development Association, for their continued partnership.

She wished the people of Mepe a successful 70th Afenorto Festival and expressed hope that the celebration would strengthen unity and inspire continued development in the Traditional Area.

Fitch Solutions retains 2025 growth rate projection at 4.2%

Fitch Solutions has reaffirmed its projection that Ghana’s economy will expand by 4.2% in 2025. This estimate slightly exceeds the International Monetary Fund’s forecast of 4% and the World Bank’s projection of 3.9%. The UK-based research firm attributes its outlook to historically high gold prices, which are expected to cushion the Ghanaian economy against a global slowdown triggered by rising tariffs. Higher gold prices are anticipated to strengthen government revenue, enhance foreign exchange earnings, and help sustain currency stability. The report also highlights that Ghana is relatively less vulnerable to increasing trade restrictions from the United States, given that its primary exports—gold and crude oil—are not directly affected by the tariffs introduced by President Trump’s administration. Moreover, the US constitutes only about 4% to 5% of Ghana’s total exports. In contrast, Ghana’s trade relations are more heavily oriented toward China and European countries, particul...

BoG injects $20m into FX market to support 11 BDCs

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has injected $20 million into the foreign exchange market in the latest round of its forward FX auction targeted at Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs). The intervention, which benefited eleven BDCs, is part of the central bank’s broader strategy to stabilise the cedi and ensure price stability in the petroleum downstream sector. Held on Tuesday, April 29, the auction was priced at a locked exchange rate of GHS 14.28 to the US dollar, with bid offers ranging from GHS 13.85 to GHS 15.55. This move reflects the BoG’s continued effort to deepen forex liquidity and safeguard the domestic fuel supply chain against volatility in global energy markets. By directly supplying FX to BDCs, the central bank seeks to ease pressure on the interbank market, guarantee the uninterrupted flow of petroleum products, and mitigate the pass-through effects of exchange rate fluctuations on fuel prices. The $20 million disbursement forms part of a $120 million programme for th...
