MTN Ghana Commits To Expanding Connectivity And Economic Growth In Northern Ghana

MTN Ghana has reinforced its commitment to expanding connectivity and supporting economic growth across Northern Ghana as it marks 30 years of operations in the country.

The commitment was highlighted at a Regional Media and Stakeholder Forum held in Tamale, which brought together media practitioners from the Northern, Savannah, Upper East and North East Regions to discuss developments in the telecommunications industry and MTN Ghana's contribution to Ghana's digital transformation.

Addressing participants, Emmanuel Afutu, Senior Manager, Network Projects Implementation at MTN Ghana, expressed appreciation to the media and stakeholders for their partnership over the past three decades and acknowledged their contribution to MTN Ghana's growth and success.

Thirty years ago, a mobile phone was a luxury. A signal was a miracle. Today, connectivity has become an essential part of everyday life, enabling people to access information, transfer money, grow businesses and connect with opportunities," he said.

MTN, Northern Ghana, Connectivity

Afutu noted that MTN Ghana's journey over the past 30 years has been driven by a commitment to connecting people and enabling progress. He said the company currently serves more than 32 million subscribers and continues to invest significantly in strengthening its network and enhancing customer experience. “MTN Ghana is investing US$1.1 billion over the next three years, including approximately US$380 million in 2026, to enhance network capacity, improve service quality and strengthen the resilience of its infrastructure. As part of this investment, MTN Ghana is deploying 500 new sites nationwide, including new sites in the Northern, Savannah, Upper East and North East Regions.”

We believe that the true value of connectivity is measured not only by the sites we build or the technology we deploy, but by the opportunities it creates and the lives it touches," he added.

Afutu also highlighted MTN Ghana's strong business performance in the first half of 2026, noting that service revenue grew by 32.3% to GH¢15.0 billion, while EBITDA increased by 47.1% to GH¢9.3 billion. Profit after tax also rose by 46.8% to GH¢5.1 billion, reflecting the resilience of the business and the strength of its strategy.

In addition to its strong financial performance, MTN Ghana contributed GH¢5.6 billion in direct and indirect taxes and GH¢384.7 million in fees and levies during the first half of 2026, underscoring its significant contribution to national development.

As MTN Ghana celebrates its 30th anniversary under the theme, "30 Years of Progress, Powered by You," the company remains committed to expanding connectivity, enabling digital inclusion and creating shared value for customers, communities and the nation. Through continued investment in network infrastructure, innovation and sustainable growth, MTN Ghana aims to support Ghana's digital transformation and contribute meaningfully to the country's socio-economic development.

Fitch Solutions retains 2025 growth rate projection at 4.2%

Fitch Solutions has reaffirmed its projection that Ghana’s economy will expand by 4.2% in 2025. This estimate slightly exceeds the International Monetary Fund’s forecast of 4% and the World Bank’s projection of 3.9%. The UK-based research firm attributes its outlook to historically high gold prices, which are expected to cushion the Ghanaian economy against a global slowdown triggered by rising tariffs. Higher gold prices are anticipated to strengthen government revenue, enhance foreign exchange earnings, and help sustain currency stability. The report also highlights that Ghana is relatively less vulnerable to increasing trade restrictions from the United States, given that its primary exports—gold and crude oil—are not directly affected by the tariffs introduced by President Trump’s administration. Moreover, the US constitutes only about 4% to 5% of Ghana’s total exports. In contrast, Ghana’s trade relations are more heavily oriented toward China and European countries, particul...

BoG injects $20m into FX market to support 11 BDCs

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has injected $20 million into the foreign exchange market in the latest round of its forward FX auction targeted at Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs). The intervention, which benefited eleven BDCs, is part of the central bank’s broader strategy to stabilise the cedi and ensure price stability in the petroleum downstream sector. Held on Tuesday, April 29, the auction was priced at a locked exchange rate of GHS 14.28 to the US dollar, with bid offers ranging from GHS 13.85 to GHS 15.55. This move reflects the BoG’s continued effort to deepen forex liquidity and safeguard the domestic fuel supply chain against volatility in global energy markets. By directly supplying FX to BDCs, the central bank seeks to ease pressure on the interbank market, guarantee the uninterrupted flow of petroleum products, and mitigate the pass-through effects of exchange rate fluctuations on fuel prices. The $20 million disbursement forms part of a $120 million programme for th...
