Ghana rises to sixth among world’s largest gold producers, overtakes US

Ghana ranked sixth among the world’s largest gold-producing countries in 2025, producing 185 tonnes of gold, the Ghana Chamber of Mines has disclosed.

The ranking represents an improvement from Ghana’s traditional seventh position, with the country overtaking the United States following an increase in domestic production and a decline in US output.

Director of Analysis, Research and Finance at the Chamber, Christopher Nyarko, disclosed this in an interview with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Monday, August 17.

We are number six. We’re number six now, right after Peru. So globally, China, Russia, Australia, Canada, Peru, then Ghana comes in, and then the United States follow,” he said.

Nyarko explained that Ghana had traditionally ranked seventh globally but moved ahead of the United States in 2025 after production in the US declined.

Last year [2025], Ghana overtook the US, but traditionally, we’ve always been number seven,” Mr Nyarko said.

He attributed the decline in US production partly to technical challenges in Nevada, one of the country’s major gold-producing areas.

Last year [2025], they ran into a number of technical issues. So production for the country as a whole dropped. And of course, given the dynamics in Ghana, we saw Ghana displace the United States,” he added.

According to Nyarko, China remained the world’s largest gold producer, followed by Russia, Australia, Canada and Peru.

He, however, noted that rankings among some of the leading producers can vary depending on the source of data, particularly for China, Russia and Australia.

Even depending on the kind of source of your data, there’s always some tension between Russia, China, and Australia, in terms of who is the largest producer,” he said.

Nyarko said the Chamber relied on independent sources in assessing global gold production figures.

Ghana’s sixth-place ranking comes after a record year for domestic gold production, with the country producing 5.94 million ounces in 2025.

Small-scale mining accounted for 52.38 per cent of total output, overtaking the large-scale sector for the first time in Ghana’s more than 100-year history of commercial mining.

The Chamber has projected further growth in Ghana’s gold production in 2026, forecasting national output between 6.1 million and 6.7 million ounces.

Fitch Solutions retains 2025 growth rate projection at 4.2%

Fitch Solutions has reaffirmed its projection that Ghana’s economy will expand by 4.2% in 2025. This estimate slightly exceeds the International Monetary Fund’s forecast of 4% and the World Bank’s projection of 3.9%. The UK-based research firm attributes its outlook to historically high gold prices, which are expected to cushion the Ghanaian economy against a global slowdown triggered by rising tariffs. Higher gold prices are anticipated to strengthen government revenue, enhance foreign exchange earnings, and help sustain currency stability. The report also highlights that Ghana is relatively less vulnerable to increasing trade restrictions from the United States, given that its primary exports—gold and crude oil—are not directly affected by the tariffs introduced by President Trump’s administration. Moreover, the US constitutes only about 4% to 5% of Ghana’s total exports. In contrast, Ghana’s trade relations are more heavily oriented toward China and European countries, particul...

BoG injects $20m into FX market to support 11 BDCs

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has injected $20 million into the foreign exchange market in the latest round of its forward FX auction targeted at Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs). The intervention, which benefited eleven BDCs, is part of the central bank’s broader strategy to stabilise the cedi and ensure price stability in the petroleum downstream sector. Held on Tuesday, April 29, the auction was priced at a locked exchange rate of GHS 14.28 to the US dollar, with bid offers ranging from GHS 13.85 to GHS 15.55. This move reflects the BoG’s continued effort to deepen forex liquidity and safeguard the domestic fuel supply chain against volatility in global energy markets. By directly supplying FX to BDCs, the central bank seeks to ease pressure on the interbank market, guarantee the uninterrupted flow of petroleum products, and mitigate the pass-through effects of exchange rate fluctuations on fuel prices. The $20 million disbursement forms part of a $120 million programme for th...
