MTN Ghana raises the stakes on corporate philanthropy as it turns 30

MTN Ghana, Sustainability MonthMTN Ghana has more than doubled the prize fund for its flagship community-recognition programme, a move that lands at the intersection of corporate anniversary marketing and a broader question facing the telecoms group: how it manages its public standing as its footprint in Ghanaian life continues to grow.

The company raised the top prize in its Heroes of Change initiative to GH¢400,000 from GH¢200,000 as it opened nominations for an eighth season this week, alongside increases to category-winner awards, to GH¢200,000 from GH¢60,000, and finalist payouts, which rise fourfold to GH¢100,000 from GH¢25,000. The changes were unveiled in Accra as part of MTN Ghana's 30th anniversary programming and the company's designated Sustainability Month.

Scale as signal

The size of the increase is the notable data point. A quadrupling of finalist awards is a significant step up for a programme already in its seventh successful cycle, and it comes with the operational apparatus to match: up to 30 nominees will be shortlisted in September, 10 finalists will compete across a televised series running from December to March, and the season will close with a national awards ceremony.

Adwoa Wiafe, MTN Ghana's chief corporate services and sustainability officer, framed the expanded prize pool as forward-looking rather than retrospective — "an investment in the beneficiaries' future impact," rather than payment for work already done. That distinction is deliberate. It allows MTN to present itself not merely as a sponsor rewarding past achievement, but as a co-investor in outcomes still to be delivered, a framing that extends the company's association with the eventual results.

A track record with tangible outputs

The programme's credibility rests partly on cases like that of Dr Angela Dwamena-Aboagye, founder of the Ark Foundation Ghana and the season seven overall winner, who said the funding had allowed her organisation to renovate its transit shelter for survivors of domestic violence, sexual abuse and trafficking. Georgina Asare Fiagbenu, MTN Ghana's acting general manager for sustainability and shared value, pointed to a wider pattern of teachers, volunteers and community leaders surfaced by the initiative over its history, tying this year's edition to the theme "Small Actions, Big Impact."

These are concrete, verifiable outcomes rather than abstractions, and they matter to the programme's standing. But they also serve a second function: each success story becomes evidence the company can cite when the value of its broader sustainability spending is questioned, whether by investors, regulators or the public.

Context: a company managing more than its network

The investment in visible community giving comes as MTN Ghana's economic footprint draws scrutiny on other fronts. The group's mobile money arm now manages a customer float comparable in scale to the deposit base of Ghana's largest banks, a level of financial influence that has already prompted separate debate over regulatory oversight. Set against that backdrop, an expanded, nationally televised philanthropy programme functions as more than a goodwill gesture: it is part of how a dominant telecoms operator manages its relationship with the public at a moment when its size, in payments as much as in mobile subscriptions, is increasingly hard to ignore.

None of this diminishes the programme's practical value to its beneficiaries, several of whom point to real, delivered outcomes. But the scale of this year's increase suggests a company that understands the reputational return on being seen to give, and is prepared to price that return considerably higher than it did a year ago.

Fitch Solutions retains 2025 growth rate projection at 4.2%

Fitch Solutions has reaffirmed its projection that Ghana’s economy will expand by 4.2% in 2025. This estimate slightly exceeds the International Monetary Fund’s forecast of 4% and the World Bank’s projection of 3.9%. The UK-based research firm attributes its outlook to historically high gold prices, which are expected to cushion the Ghanaian economy against a global slowdown triggered by rising tariffs. Higher gold prices are anticipated to strengthen government revenue, enhance foreign exchange earnings, and help sustain currency stability. The report also highlights that Ghana is relatively less vulnerable to increasing trade restrictions from the United States, given that its primary exports—gold and crude oil—are not directly affected by the tariffs introduced by President Trump’s administration. Moreover, the US constitutes only about 4% to 5% of Ghana’s total exports. In contrast, Ghana’s trade relations are more heavily oriented toward China and European countries, particul...

BoG injects $20m into FX market to support 11 BDCs

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has injected $20 million into the foreign exchange market in the latest round of its forward FX auction targeted at Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs). The intervention, which benefited eleven BDCs, is part of the central bank’s broader strategy to stabilise the cedi and ensure price stability in the petroleum downstream sector. Held on Tuesday, April 29, the auction was priced at a locked exchange rate of GHS 14.28 to the US dollar, with bid offers ranging from GHS 13.85 to GHS 15.55. This move reflects the BoG’s continued effort to deepen forex liquidity and safeguard the domestic fuel supply chain against volatility in global energy markets. By directly supplying FX to BDCs, the central bank seeks to ease pressure on the interbank market, guarantee the uninterrupted flow of petroleum products, and mitigate the pass-through effects of exchange rate fluctuations on fuel prices. The $20 million disbursement forms part of a $120 million programme for th...
