Africa Must Fix Internal Connectivity to Unlock AfCFTA Benefits – Prof. Bokpin

Economist and Professor of Finance, Prof. Godfred Bokpin, has called on African governments to address the continent's weak transport, logistics and payment infrastructure, warning that high transaction costs continue to undermine intra-African trade despite the launch of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Speaking at the Prudential Bank Business Forum on Wednesday on the topic, 'The Future of Intra-African Trade: Opportunities, Challenges and the Role of Ghanaian Businesses under AfCFTA',  Prof. Bokpin said Africa's trade architecture remains largely designed to serve external markets rather than facilitate commerce within the continent. According to him, decades after independence, African countries still face structural barriers that make it easier to trade with Europe and Asia than with neighboring countries. He noted that in many cases, goods destined for another African country must first pass through Europe before reaching their final destination,...

Acting Managing Director of Prudential Bank LTD has reinforced the importance of personalized relationship-centred banking in shaping the future of financial services. Speaking as a panelist at the Lafferty Retail Banking Council latest global webinar, Ebow Quayson said the era where bank’s considered operations and transactions as central to banking is over, saying stronger emphasis must be placed on relationship management.    Speaking on the theme “Design and the Branch of the future”, Quayson said the role of the traditional bank branch is rapidly evolving from a place primarily associated with transactions to one centred on relationships and customer empowerment. He noted that for decades, branches were designed primarily for processing transactions, deposits, withdrawals and loan applications. Customers visited to complete tasks and the relationship with the Bank often ended when the transaction was finished. That model, he said, is no longer sufficient. He e...

“How You Bank Will Define You”: Prudential Bank Charts Hybrid Future Led by Experience, Not Identity

T he Head of Digital Transformation at Prudential Bank Ltd, Terrance Addy, has said, that the future of banking will be defined by AI-driven services and hybrid models that balance seamless digital experiences with human trust. In the near future, “Where do you bank?” will be the wrong question. The right one will be: “How do you bank?”. That’s the shift Mr. Addy says will define the next era of financial services. Speaking in an interview on the future of banking in Accra,  Addy laid out a vision where customer experience, not loyalty to institutions, becomes the core of the competition. Customers will engage each other based on experiences, how seamless it is to transact and how fast it works, and not necessarily the institution behind it,” he said.   Embedded, Invisible, Predictive At the centre of Addy’s forecast is embedded finance: banking that is woven into shopping, travel, and bill payments until it feels invisible. “The banking part should be so seamless it be...

Prudential Bank CIO Backs Sustainable Tech Leadership

Technology leaders must move beyond “firefighting” and build systems and teams that endure beyond their tenure, Prudential Bank CIO Leopold L. L. Armah has said. Speaking as a panellist at the Global CIO Summit – Ghana Edition 2026, Armah said the 24/7 nature of today’s digital environment is pushing CIOs and CISOs to their limits, and sustainable leadership is the only way to manage the pressure without burning out. Sustainable leadership is building people, systems and purpose that remain effective long after the leader has left the room,” he told delegates. From operations to strategy Armah noted that the CIO role has expanded far beyond managing infrastructure. Today’s technology leaders oversee digital transformation, cybersecurity, regulatory compliance, customer experience and emerging technologies like AI. With that expanded remit comes the risk of constant crisis mode. He urged organisations to reward prevention, not just quick fixes. “Successful leadership is not about ...

Asante noted that Mother’s Day often highlights the quiet sacrifices of mothers whose children are hospitalized. “On the hearts of every woman is the longing for the child. We chose this hospital, this ward, because we wanted to ease that burden. From this visit, we have all seen that giving back is not a nice thing...

Late to Digital? Partner Up, Says Prudential Bank Ag. MD

Banks that started late in the digital race can still win – if they partner with fintechs,” says Prudential Bank’s Acting Managing Director, Ebow Quayson. “Partnerships are no longer optional. They are the quickest route to scale.” Speaking to a Pan-African audience at the Lafferty Retail Banking Council Africa Meeting, Quayson pointed to PBL’s own digital journey as proof saying fintechs came handy to close the gap on reach and service delivery almost overnight. At a time when our digital infrastructure was still developing, fintech partnerships enabled us to quickly bridge the gap in reach and service delivery,” he explained, citing mobile money integration and USSD-based services as key examples. “Prudential Bank was not a partner bank to any telco, yet customers needed mobile money services on the Bank’s USSD platform. Instead of building everything from scratch, the Bank turned to fintechs. “They helped us narrow the gap quickly – in reach, speed to market, and value-added s...

How Financial Institutions Drive SME Access to Finance in Africa

By Oliver Tackie When Jasent Enterprise asked their bankers for GHS 50,000 to restock their trade, the answer was no. No audited books. No land title. Too risky. Last month they tried again. This time the CEO’s Ghana Card and two years of MoMo transactions got her approval in 48 hours. Jasent’s story shows Africa’s big contradiction: Small and medium enterprises create over 80% of jobs, yet they remain shut out of formal credit. That is changing – fast – as banks rethink how they lend. Why Banks Still Say No For decades, the problem was simple: no traceable identity, no loan. Banks lend deposits, so they fear default. Most SMEs run informal books and cannot offer collateral. Digital ID systems are fixing the first hurdle. Ghana’s upgraded Ghana Card now links citizens to verifiable, traceable identities and even works for payments. Nigeria’s NIN and BVN, Kenya’s Maisha Namba, and Rwanda’s national digital ID do the same. “Once we can authenticate and trace a borrower online, we c...

He noted that the day was not for reviewing contracts but for celebrating partnerships that drive collective success. I see firsthand how critical our suppliers are to the stren...

Prudential Bank Ladies Celebrate IWD with Candid Talk on Love, Life, and Livelihood

It was a scene of warmth, elegance, and utmost honesty at Prudential Bank Limited’s Head Office as the Bank’s female staff gathered to mark International Women’s Day (IWD). Far from a stiff corporate ritual, the event was set up as a serene "girls' tea session," complete with a beautifully arranged space, all purple showing in dress and decor, a hearty breakfast, and lunch. However, the real nourishment came from the conversation, as three formidable women took the stage in a panel discussion to dissect the perennial struggles of "Work-Life Balance and Office Romance" in the high-pressure world of banking. Head of Human Resources, Lilian Antwiwaa Asante; Unit Head for Branch & Channel Monitoring, Nancy Evelyn Korkor Oheneba-Dornyo; and Branch Manager at the Ring Road Central Branch Elsie Kumordzi took turns to share thoughts and personal experiences on the topic. The central theme of the morning was quickly established: "balance" might be a myth. ...
