The Ghana Chamber of Mines is observing October as Sustainability and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, bringing together two important priorities: advancing responsible mining and promoting the health and well-being of employees, families and communities.
The observance highlights the mining industry’s contribution to sustainable development while reinforcing the importance of environmental stewardship, social responsibility and good governance. It also recognises that healthy people and resilient communities are fundamental to achieving a sustainable future.
Commenting on the initiative, the Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber, Ing. Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, said: “Sustainability is fundamentally about people and the future we are building together. Our responsibility as an industry extends beyond responsible resource development to creating lasting value for communities and safeguarding the well-being of the people who make our progress possible.”
Throughout October, the Chamber and its member companies will undertake a range of activities to promote public awareness and participation. These will include social media campaigns, webinars and radio discussions on sustainability and breast cancer awareness, as well as tree planting, tree maintenance and clean-up exercises across mine sites and member company locations. Member companies will also undertake breast cancer awareness and screening exercises to promote early detection and greater awareness of breast health.
The Chamber will host a webinar showcasing the sustainability initiatives of member companies. The session will provide a platform for companies to share experiences and good practices, highlight measurable impacts, and strengthen collaboration across the industry. Through the month-long
observance, the Chamber seeks to emphasise that sustainability is not only about how mineral resources are developed, but also about protecting the environment, creating lasting value for communities and promoting the well-being of people.
The Chamber encourages its members, stakeholders and the public to participate actively in the activities and support
