India approved US$193.73m lines of credit to Ghana

The government of India has approved an amount of US$193.73million as lines of credit to Ghana for some infrastructure projects including, rural electrification, supply of railway equipment, agro processing plant, improved fish harvesting and fish processing project, among others, all at various stages of implementation.
In addition to lines of credit for projects, India has rendered assistance to Ghana in its human resource development through various bilateral and multilateral programmes under the India Technical and Economic Cooperation, ITEC of the Ministry of External Affairs of India.

This was announced by His Excellency Rajinder Bhagat, High Commissioner of the Republic of India to Ghana, at a reception in his residence in Accra last week to mark the 63rd India Republic day celebration.
Rajinder said, India-Ghana relations have been enriched by similarities in the world view, and have been strengthened in recent years through enhanced South-South Cooperation between the two countries.
Bilateral relations between India and Ghana have been strengthened through frequent interactions he said.

“As friends we rejoice in the achievements of Ghana. With the consolidation of democracy, Ghana is today a role model worth emulating for many nations. Ghana is projected to be the fastest growing economy in Sub-Saharan Africa with growth rate of 13%. Having peaceful and democratic credentials and friendly people, Ghana is also an attractive investment destination” he stated.

He also mentioned that an India Kofi Annan Center of Excellence in Information and Communication Technology has been established in Ghana with India’s technical and financial assistance with a view to help strengthen the ICT capacities in Ghana and the republic of India extended two years support to the centre at a cost of US$0.86million last year.

Sherry Ayittey, Minister of Environment Science and Technology and leader of the government of Ghana delegation to the event on her side thanked the people of India for their continuous cooperation with Ghana and said a sterling example of the cooperation is the memorandum of Understanding signed in Accra July, 2010 for the setting up of a fertilizer plant in Ghana at an estimated cost of US$1.3billion.
In addition she said the government of the republic of India has various funds for the socio-economic development projects etc.

The minister also mentioned that, Ghana-India cooperation has been manifested in the area of human resource development, where the government of India, under the ITEC programme offers scholarships for various training programmes for qualified Ghanaians to attend India institutions of higher learning and upgrade their professional skills and educational qualifications.
