The Integrated Social Development Centre (ISODEC) has urged the government to take immediate action against illegal mining, citing the recent helicopter crash that claimed the lives of two Cabinet Ministers and six other officials as a stark reminder of the pressing need for decisive measures.
ISODEC's Executive Director, Sam Danse, emphasized that the government must declare a state of emergency on mining to address the existential threat posed by illegal mining to Ghana's environment, communities, and natural resources. Furthermore, Danse called for the repeal of Act LI 2462, which he believes is essential in tackling the menace of illegal mining.
To effectively combat illegal mining, ISODEC is also advocating for strengthened collaboration between the government and law enforcement agencies to identify, expose, and prosecute kingpins and cohorts involved in the illicit activity. This, according to Danse, would help confiscate proceeds from individuals who have used illegal mining to amass personal wealth and enhance monitoring and enforcement mechanisms.
The lives lost in this tragedy must not be in vain. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and future generations to take decisive action against illegal mining and protect our environment," Danse stated.
ISODEC's call to action comes on the heels of the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of esteemed government officials who were on their way to launch a community mining program aimed at fighting galamsey. The incident has highlighted the urgent need for the government to enforce existing laws and regulations against illegal mining and mining in forest areas.
In addition to these measures, ISODEC is urging the government to accelerate the implementation of sustainable community mining programs that prioritize environmental protection, promote soil and vegetative health, and foster local participation. By empowering communities to engage in responsible mining practices, Ghana can create pathways towards sustainable development that balances economic growth and preservation of natural heritage.
As the nation mourns the loss of lives in the recent tragedy, ISODEC's call to action serves as a poignant reminder of the need for collective efforts to protect Ghana's environment and ensure a future where mining operates within the bounds of legality and sustainability.
