The newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Dr. Ken Ashigbey, has reaffirmed his commitment to the fight against illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, declaring that his stance on the issue remains firm despite his new role.
Dr. Ashigbey, who also serves as the Convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, said his leadership position at the Chamber will only deepen his resolve to push for responsible and sustainable mining practices in the country.
In a media interview on Tuesday, June 10, he emphasised that his appointment presents greater opportunities to influence industry players and coordinate more impactful engagements.
There is an alignment between the Chamber itself and ensuring that Ghana mines sustainably,” Dr. Ashigbey noted. “So, I am not sure that much will change. I am just hoping that my colleagues on the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey would also step up to the plate and take some of the responsibility.”
He added that the Chamber will now serve as a strategic platform for stakeholder dialogue and advocacy.
The only thing that you might see happening a lot more is that by virtue of the opportunities given to me, a lot of the engagement with the stakeholders will be using the Chamber as the vehicle,” he explained.
