14 arrested nationwide over WASSCE malpractice – WAEC

At least 14 people, including teachers, students, and invigilators, have been arrested across the country in connection with the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The arrests were recorded at Yeji Senior High School, Abbott College in Asante Bekwai, Atwima Kwanwoma Presbyterian SHS, and several other examination centres nationwide.

Addressing the media, Head of Public Affairs at the West African Examination Council (WAEC), John Kapi, said the number of arrests continues to rise.

He warned that the results of candidates from all affected schools will be subjected to strict scrutiny.

Kapi further disclosed that the Adventist Day Senior High School centre in Kumasi had been shut down after multiple mobile phones were confiscated. Candidates there have been relocated to the WAEC regional office to continue the exams.

He cited several cases, including two impersonators arrested at Kasoa who have been sentenced to six months each in prison, while an accomplice received an eight-month sentence.

Additionally, the proprietor of Christian School in Kukurantumi and a teacher were arrested for creating a WhatsApp group to share exam questions with students.

In Abura Dunkwa, one Ebenazer Fynn was arrested for impersonation and is facing further investigation.

Kapi emphasised that WAEC remains committed to safeguarding the integrity of the exams and will not hesitate to take stringent measures against malpractice.
