MTN Ghana Foundation Awards 500 Bright Scholarships for 2025/2026 Academic Year

The MTN Ghana Foundation has awarded 500 Bright Scholarships to brilliant but needy students and teachers across the country for the 2025/2026 academic year. The awardees consist of 300 students pursuing science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), and vocational training, as well as 200 teachers upgrading their skills at public universities.

The scholarship package covers tuition, accommodation, stipends, and laptops, aiming to support students from diverse backgrounds, including those with special needs.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony in Accra, MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett emphasized that the scholarship is not just about financial support but about "investing in dreams, unlocking potential, and securing the future of Ghana".

Blewett highlighted the programme's focus on science and technology, aligning with MTN's business interests, and emphasized the importance of regional coverage to ensure equal opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds.

We deliberately cover all regions to ensure equal opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds," he said.

Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer (CCSSO)- MTN, in her welcome remarks, emphasized the significance of investing in people and the impact it has on individuals and society.

We are celebrating today because we believe in the potential of our students," Wiafe said. "You are the garden, and knowledge is like a garden. If it is not cultivated, it cannot be harvested. You are good enough. We are cultivating today, and we expect to reap and harvest."

MTN Ghana Foundation, Bright Scholarship

Wiafe noted that the MTN Bright Scholarship scheme, launched in 2018, has supported over 700 students nationwide, enabling them to focus on their studies and pursue their career aspirations. "We came in to make their dreams come true," she said, urging the students to remain diligent, creative, and enthusiastic in their pursuit of knowledge.

The event, themed "Honouring Students' Excellence through Scholarship," recognized the determination and inspiring hope of the beneficiaries. Wiafe urged the students to remain diligent, creative, and enthusiastic in their pursuit of knowledge, emphasizing that the rest lies in their hands.

The Director of Policy at the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Dr. Emmanuel Newman, commended MTN Ghana for its consistent support of education through the scholarship programme. He urged the beneficiary students to utilize the scholarship packages wisely, not just for personal gain but also for the betterment of their families and the nation.

We expect you to live, innovate, and be inspired. We want to see you progress," Dr. Newman emphasized, expressing his optimism about the future of the students. He envisioned the beneficiaries becoming future leaders, innovators, and professionals in various fields, including science, technology, and public service.

He urged MTN to consider expanding the scholarship program to cover at least 100 students from each region of Ghana. This would increase the annual beneficiaries to 1,600, surpassing the company's current projection of 1,500 in three years

The MTN Foundation plans to increase the number of beneficiaries to 1,500 within the next three years, with Dr. Newman suggesting an expansion to at least 1,600 annually, representing 100 students from each of Ghana's 16 regions.

The transaction, registered with the Registrar of Companies and approved by the Minerals Commission, ends nearly two decades of under-investment, legal disputes, and capital shortfalls that kept the concessions dormant. With global gold prices trading above $3,000 per ounce, the move comes at a time when Ghana is seeking fresh mining revenue to support its IMF-backed fiscal consolidation programme.
