MTN Ghana has taken its 30th anniversary celebrations to the streets of Accra with a customer appreciation float designed to strengthen its relationship with customers, employees and the government.
The float, which formed part of activities marking the company’s 30 years of operations in Ghana, moved from the MTN Ghana Head Office through parts of the Ministries area, Osu and Oxford Street, Ring Road East and sections of Liberation Road before returning to the company’s headquarters.
The anniversary is being celebrated under the theme “30 Years of Progress, Powered by You,” with MTN Ghana positioning customers as central to its three-decade journey.
Speaking after the activity, Chief Human Resource Officer of MTN Ghana, Esi Mmriba Wilson, said the float was intended to reaffirm the company’s commitment to Ghana and express appreciation to customers for their support over the years.
Today’s float was to announce to Ghanaians that MTN is here to stay,” she said.
She said the company’s 30-year presence in Ghana had been defined by providing connectivity and services while working closely with customers and other stakeholders.
Thirty years of business in Ghana is showing up, giving connectivity and working with customers,” Wilson said. “Today was to tell our customers that we appreciate what they do, and so we will show up for them so that they show up for us as well.”
Partnership with customers and government
The float also provided an opportunity for MTN Ghana to engage people along the route, with the company distributing tokens to members of the public as a gesture of appreciation.
Wilson said the activity demonstrated the company’s relationship with both its customers and the government.
What does that mean to us? It means we are in total partnership with our government and our customers,” she said.
The anniversary activities follow MTN Ghana’s formal launch of its 30th anniversary celebrations in May, when the company announced a renewed focus on network expansion, fibre infrastructure, digital platforms and other investments.
Staff engagement
Wilson said the celebration was not limited to customers, noting that employees from MTN’s Mobile Money and connectivity operations also participated.
We brought together our MoMo staff and then the connectivity staff,” she said.
According to her, the internal engagement was important because employees also needed an opportunity to reflect on the company’s journey and discuss its direction for the future.
Sometimes you have to also, as much as we are showing up to customers, sit and deliberate amongst ourselves to understand where we are going to from here,” she added.
She said the celebration also provided an opportunity for staff to socialise and build stronger relationships.
We are Ghanaians. We always connect with food, we connect with drinks, and so that’s what we are doing today,” she said.
More activities planned
Wilson disclosed that additional activities would be organised as MTN Ghana continues its anniversary celebrations.
She said the company had recently completed its digital week, while the marketing team was expected to roll out more activities, including customer promotions and prize-winning opportunities.
She encouraged customers to participate in the anniversary activities, noting that the company was using the occasion to recognise people who had supported it throughout its 30-year journey.
It will interest you to know that these 30 years, we have customers who have stood with us from day one till today. And so we celebrate them,” she said. “Every activity we do, we celebrate our customers as well.”
MTN Ghana has already been rewarding customers under its MTN@30 promotion, which offered prizes including Toyota Land Cruiser Prados, cash and data rewards. The promotion was designed to reward customers for their everyday use of calls, data and Mobile Money services.
Regional celebrations
The Chief Human Resource Officer also said the anniversary activities were being replicated across MTN Ghana’s regional operations.
“Yes, today the other regions are part of the activities,” she said, explaining that most regions were undertaking their own anniversary activities.
She noted that the Eastern Region’s activity would take place at a later date because of activities scheduled in Koforidua.
