Gold Fields Ghana Foundation deepens childhood cancer awareness drive; invests $4.8m in community health

 Residents of Mehuntem Mile 10 in the Prestea Huni Valley Municipality (PHMA) have been taken through an intensive childhood cancer awareness campaign as the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation strengthened efforts to promote early detection and improve access to healthcare in its host communities.

Held under the theme “Demonstrating Impact: From Challenge to Change", the initiative went beyond commemoration, delivering practical health education and direct services to families within the Foundation’s operational catchment area.

In partnership with the Municipal Health Directorate and PHMA, the Foundation organised community engagements focused on educating residents about early warning signs of childhood cancer, preventive measures, and available treatment options.

Health professionals underscored the importance of early diagnosis in improving survival outcomes among children.

To further reduce financial barriers to healthcare, the Foundation facilitated free registration and renewal of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), enabling more residents to access essential medical services.

Speaking to the media, Executive Secretary Abdul Razak Yabuku said that since its establishment in 2004, the Foundation has implemented several health interventions, including adolescent sexual and reproductive health programmes, quarterly medical outreaches, and the construction of health facilities in host communities.

He noted that the Foundation consistently aligns its interventions with global health advocacy efforts, observing international awareness campaigns such as World Malaria Day, Menstrual Hygiene Day, and Breast Cancer Awareness Month to deepen public education.

The Foundation has invested over US$4.8 million in various health initiatives, demonstrating its commitment to improving healthcare access and community well-being,” he said.

Lead Specialist for Health Services, Dr. Magdalene Bakari, reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to improving health outcomes in host communities.

Early detection and treatment can significantly improve survival outcomes for our children,” she emphasised, urging families to seek medical care promptly when symptoms are detected.

She added that the Foundation is also rolling out a water project in the area, stressing that access to clean water remains critical to sustaining good health.

Our goal is to reach every community we work with. Cancer awareness is critical, especially in communities with many young children. We want families to have the knowledge and access needed to seek care early,” she noted.
